|MONTREAL, Canada, July 2. A Canadian national record tumbled during the second night of long course meter action at the Canada Cup in Montreal.
Katerine Savard downed the Canadian record in the women's 50 fly with a scorching time of 26.49 in the women's 50 fly. That effort cleared the 26.71 set by Victoria Poon in 2009, and moved Savard up to 16th in the nation with the swim. Ann Fittin took second in 27.10, while Chantal Vanlandeghem placed third in 27.13.
Michael Phelps cruised to victory in the men's 200 free with a 1:47.46. That swim came up short of his sixth-ranked season best of 1:46.27 from March. Matt Patton placed second in 1:49.87, while Ryan Cochrane finished third in 1:50.08.
Julia Wilkinson turned in a sterling time in the women's 100 back with a 1:00.33. That effort pushed her into a 12th-place tie in the world rankings, and nearly clipped the Canadian record of 1:00.21 set by Katelyn Murdoch back in 2009. Dominique Bouchard clocked a 1:01.90 for second in the event, while Gabrielle Soucisse placed third in 1:02.20.
Chris Brady won the men's 50 fly in 23.81 to move into a 17th-place tie in the rankings, while Wu Peng placed second in 23.98. Bobby Savulich completed the podium with a third-place 24.16.
Alexa Komarnycky took 19th in the world rankings in the women's 400 IM with a 4:41.41 for the win. Stephanie Horner placed second in 4:49.09, while Susana Escobar touched third in 4:50.97.
Tera Van Beilen touched out Haylee Johnson, 1:09.56 to 1:09.89, for the women's 100 breast crown. Ashley McGregor placed third in 1:10.17.
Scott Dickens won the men's 100 breast in 1:01.73, while Warren Barnes touched second in 1:03.34. Ashton Baumann finished third in 1:04.14. Matt Hawes snared the men's 100 back title in 55.73, while Matthew Swanston placed second in55.98. Andrew Ford wound up third in 56.84.
Barbara Jardin snagged the women's 200 free victory in 1:59.01, while Samantha Cheverton placed second in 1:59.90. Genevieve Saumur grabbed third in 2:01.11. Jordan Hartney won the men's 400 IM in 4:26.29, while Jeremie Holdom (4:31.07) and Matthew Kwatyra (4:31.10) completed the top three.
