African Long Course Championships: South Africa Sweeps Gold Medals on Day Five -- September 18, 2010

CASABLANCA, Morocco, September 18. THE fifth day of the African Long Course Championships featured a gold-medal sweep by South Africa.

South Africa's Wesley Gilchrist set a meet record in winning the men's 200 fly. He clocked a 2:00.72 to wipe out the 2:01.68 set by Theo Verster in 2002. Egypt's Marwan Osman (2:04.08) and Mostafa Atef Mostafa (2:06.00) placed second and third.

South Africa's Mandy Loots cruised to the women's 200 IM with a meet record of 2:16.77. That swim crushed her previous mark of 2:18.91 set in 2008. Tunisia's Sarra Lajnef touched second in 2:20.23, while South Africa's Bianca Meyer finished third in 2:20.52.


South Africa's Darren Murray topped the men's 100 back in 55.67. That swim eclipsed the 2008 meet record of 55.92 set by George Du Rand. Egypt's Mohamed Khaled Hussein finished second in 58.09, while Tunisia's Taki Mrabet wound up third in 58.58.

South Africa's Karin Prinsloo captured the women's 50 free title in 26.31 after clocking a 26.15 in prelims. Egypt's Farida Osman posted a second-place 26.72, while South Africa's Chanelle Van Wyk earned third in 26.76.

In relay action, South Africa's Chanelle Van Wyk, Kathryn Meaklim, Vanessa Mohr and Karin Prinsloo won the women's 400 medley relay in a meet-record 4:09.53.
