European Championships: Russia Completes Gold-Medal Sweep, Natalia Ischenko Star of Show

BUDAPEST, Hungary, August 8. THE Russian contingent won a four gold medals on offer this week in synchronized swimming at the European Championships, which Natalia Ischenko having a hand in every one of them.

Russia's Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina topped the duet free finale with a 98.7-point tally. The duo earned 49.3 points in technical merit and 49.4 points in artistic impression, including a perfect 10 in each category.

Spain's Ona Carbonell and Andrea Fuentes finished second with 96.7 points (48.2 TM and 48.5 AI), while Ukraine's Daria Iushko and Kseniya Sydorenko earned third with 93.4 points (46.7 in both TM and AI).

Ischenko made the meet a complete sweep with gold in all four events as Russia's Anastasia Ermakova, Ischenko, Elvira Khasyanova, Darya Korobova, Olga Kuzhela, Aleksandra Patskevich, Romashina, Alla Shishkina, Anzhelika Timanina and Aleksandra Zueva won the free combination routine with 98.3 points (49.1 TM and 49.2 AI), including a perfect 10 in artistic impression. Last night, Ischenko won both the solo and team routine golds as well.

Spain's Clara Basiana, Alba Cabello, Carbonell, Margalida Crespi, Fuentes, Thais Henriquez, Paula Klamburg, Irene Montrucchio, Irina Rodriguez and Cristina Salvador finished second with 97 points (48.4 TM, 48.6 AI). Ukraine's Lolita Ananasova, Inga Gillyer, Olena Grechyknina, Iushko, Olga Kondrashova, Juliya Maryanko, Oleksandra Sabada, Kateryna Sadurska, Sydorenko and Anna Voloshyna took third overall with 94.1 points (47 TM, 47.1 AI).
