August 7, 2010 Katy Freeman was 3rd in the 200 breast, but listed for making the team in the 100 and swims for Auburn, when she really swims for Santa Barbara. Micah Lawerence was 3rd in the 100 breast and does actually swim for Auburn. Are both girls supposed to be listed on the team?

August 7, 2010 Who will swim 200 IM for men? The event was not listed for both Phelps and Lochte. Isn't Beard not going to Pan Pac?
Submitted by: BlueOcean
August 8, 2010 I'm sure Beard will go. She just needs to find a nanny. ;-)

August 8, 2010 What about Josh Schneider?? Not in the team?
And Sean Ryan, he was 3. in the 1500, right?

August 8, 2010 Can Phelps and Jones swim the 100 free at Pan Pacs? Do they need to swim the 100 free to be able to get a spot on the 4x100 mens relay? Same with Berens..

August 8, 2010 The list was provided directly by USA Swimming. Our interview with Mark Schubert on SwimmingWorld.TV addresses the situation with Amanda Beard, but the short story is that she is on the team.

As far as events, I'm pretty sure all swimmers can swim anything the coaches want on this trip.

August 8, 2010 Congratulations to all the athletes who earned their place on a USA Team.

What about Josh? Not on the team, but what about his 21.97? Is USA Swimming going to mark time some more and hope this just goes away? It's terrible he broke his hand, but in a way all to convenient for USA Swimming to take a pass on making any decisions as per the roster Pan Pacs...everyone move on, no further questions please.

Wait. He swam a clean top 6 time. Is is getting funding for it as a national team member for the next year? That alone may dicatate whether this kid can economically afford to be in the sport as a post-grad.

Noone seems to know why he was entered in an event there were no intentions to have him swim, why he was not aware and why his coach(es) didn't bother to give the sheets a read before the meet. It was their job to protect the interests of their athlete.

He would not swim Pan Pacs anyways with a broken hand, but why wasn't he named to a team he earned a spot on? Because of the error in not withdrawing from the 100 fly. Well, if the consequences look like that for the athlete, why is the SwimMAC coach one of the coaches selected for this team?

Again, all due respect to David Marsh, he is a great coach. But this was a coaching staff error. Why did it then need to be a punishment only to the athlete?

August 8, 2010 My question is that the criteria listed on USA Swimming for team size is 26 men and 26 women. Both list are 30 . Why post criteria if we are not using it?
Submitted by: michcoach
August 8, 2010 26 for the pool team plus 4 for open water equals 30.

August 8, 2010 Apparently, no male made the team in the 200 IM even though the US has the top 2 swimmers in the world, lol

August 8, 2010 I think Micah Lawrence should be on the list. She is the only third-place finisher who is not, and there are only 29 listed. Must be a typo. All third-place people would get on before Pelton, whose highest finish was fourth. Lots of other typos, including the 200 IM. Clary should be listed for all four events (400 IM, 200 fly, 200 IM, 200 back).

August 8, 2010 You have to take into account that some swimmers may have declined invitations (e.g. Dagny who qualified for the team in the 800 relay).
Submitted by: ShortChange
August 8, 2010 Dagny didn't make the team. For Pan Pacifics they only take the top 4 for relays... unlike other selection meets where 5 and 6 are prelims relays.

August 8, 2010 Short Change - the criteria here for selection were different than for prior Olympic or Worlds criteria. To make the team there are only top 4 selected in the 100 free and 200 free to be on the relays (not top 6 as you're used to seeing in 2008, 2009). Dagny got 5th in the 200 free and did not qualify for a relay spot.

It's possible that Micah Lawrence declined a spot, but seems odd it would not be noted. Amanda Beard announced she'd decline but was still named to a roster spot according to the selection criteria. Next Amanda can formally withdraw and USA Swimming may add an athlete.

David is correct: rules state the last of the 3rd place finishers fills out the team before the top world ranked 4th place finisher, which would be Pelton.

Another possibility is this is a mistake.

August 8, 2010 If Lawrence had declined a spot, then another 4th place finisher would have made it to fill up the team. I'd guess a typo since they mixed up the info on Freeman too. Next 4th place would probably be Kim Vandenberg, once again based on work rankings.

August 8, 2010 According to the now updated and official roster from USA Swimming both Micah Lawrence and Katy Freeman are on the team. Here is a link to the list:http://www.usaswimming.org/_Rainbow/Documents/2a2b1338-a440-48de-8670-6f2c6f4c4d74/Pan Pac Roster 2010.pdf

August 20, 2010 Just watched the finals of the men's 4X100 Free Relay. Where was Garrett Weber-Gale? 3rd in qualifying Sr Nationals, 5th fastest time in the 100 Free finals at the Pan Pac meet yesterday! ...and they put in Phelps?!?!? Not that he did not represent with that great leadoff leg, but he did not earn the spot on that relay. Garrett did. Can someone explain that coaching move?
Submitted by: back2back
August 20, 2010 relay spots are all at coaches discretion and can include anyone on the PanPac team. They simply go with the fastest team and they must have known from training camp, etc. that Phelps (and Lochte from nationals prelims) could go faster than GWG. It's always worked out OK with the exception of the '04 Olympics where I think Phelps only went a 48.8 and they only took bronze.
Submitted by: liquidassets
August 20, 2010 If they were going to replace anyone on the relay with GWG it would have been Ryan since he just came off the 200 back.
Submitted by: ShortChange
August 20, 2010 I still don't get it. GWG was in the top 4 from Sr. Nats and swam well in the 100 FREE at Pan Pacs yesterday. Phelps swimming poorly and without a reference 100 Free time gets tapped for the relay? My order would have been leadoff with Adrian, GWG, Lochte then Lezak. Announcers talking like a new 'A' relay has been layed down...I don't think so!

August 20, 2010 My Prediction: 4 guys solidly under 48 sec in 100 Free at 2012 London and Phelps will not be one of them. Should coaches still put him on the free relay and ask someone to stand down?
Submitted by: back2back
August 21, 2010 Coaches can put anyone they want on the relay. It's their job to figure out who they think will be the four fastest guys from anyone on the team. They thought Phelps would be one of the four fastest guys. They were right. You can be added to team roster as part of a relay pool. But nobody "earns" a relay spot. I would have put Adrian on the lead off after that great sprint win. I don't think he "earned" it but I think he did deserve another shot to see if maybe he could go sub 47. The reality is that it's up to the discretion of the team coaches and always has been.

August 21, 2010 ^ Sub 48 I meant!
Submitted by: ShortChange
August 21, 2010 shortchange, what makes you think Phelps won't be one of the top 4 by 2012? It won't be easy but he seems to have as good a shot as most of them. He'll only be 27 and likely in much better shape than now. And who are the 4 you see solidly under 48 by then; Adrian is the only solid one I see so far.

As for the current relay, I figure the coaches who train the swimmers know more about what's going on that most of us do. One clue that we had was that his 100 fly at nationals was only about .7 off his LZR best, and as it turns out, that's about how far he was off his LZR best in the 100 free too. My guess is his freestyle started coming together in training camp and he put up some good times in practice.
Submitted by: liquidassets
August 21, 2010 That was backtoback's prediction. Not mine.

I think it is just evident that his speed is there. It's just the endurance for the longer events that is below par for the time being.
Submitted by: ShortChange
August 21, 2010 Agreed. Oops, brainfart... How bout it, back to back ??
