IRVINE, California, August 5. A day after stating that he had a horrible 200 fly swim to win that event, superstar Michael Phelps swept the butterfly events with a dominant effort in the men's 100 fly at the U.S. Long Course Nationals.

Phelps nearly clipped his U.S. Open record of 50.22 with a sterling time of 50.65 in the sprint fly. He cut more than a second off the previous world best time of 51.70 set by Evgeny Korotyshkin at Russian Nationals in May. The win gave Phelps his 50th national title, the most all time.

Auburn's Tyler McGill clinched second-place honors with a 52.20, while Ohio State's Tim Phillips finished third in 52.41. McGill edged his season-best time of 52.25 to improve his eighth-place ranking. Phillips jumped into the top 15 with his time.

Longhorn's Aaron Peirsol (52.80), California's Tom Shields (52.94), Team Rebel's David Seiler (53.03), Athens Bulldog Mark Dylla (53.11) and Longhorn's Ricky Berens (53.65) placed fourth through eighth in the championship finale.
