PERTH, Australia, July 5. OVER the weekend at a short course meter interclub carnival hosted by the Swan Hills Masters, Persis Rae lowered the FINA women's 90-94 200 backstroke world record.
Rae, who represents the Whitford Masters Club, clocked a time of 4:57.77 in the event, becoming the first person in the division to break the 5:00 barrier. Willy Van Rysel owned the two previous iterations of the world mark with times of 5:02.82 and 5:08.67 set in 2006. The previous three progressions went as follows:
Jewel Cooke: 6:32.92, 1999
Mary Lathram: 6:24.99, 2005
Maria Lenk: 5:39.56, 2005
