LONG BEACH, California, May 18. AT the CIF Masters meet, Torrance's Vlad Morozov claimed his second national high school record in the past few days with an astonishing effort in the men's 100-yard free.
Morozov clocked a splendid time of 42.87 as his squad's 400-yard free relay leadoff to become the first high school swimmer under 43. The swim was done at the Southern Section Masters meet at the Belmont Plaza pool. His performance wiped Winston Churchill's Jimmy Feigen completely out of the high school record books after clearing his 50-yard free on May 15 with a 19.43. Tonight's 42.87 beat Feigen's national mark of 43.05 set the same day as his previous 50 free mark of 19.49.
Olympic legend Mark Spitz was in attendance, and said Morozov's swim in the 100 free was "unbelieveable."

May 19, 2010 Was wondering the same thing philip. He has raved about his former Russian Olympic coach, so I've gotta imagine he's leaning towards competing for them internationally. Submitted by: GigEmAggies
May 19, 2010 With him and Danila Izotov, the future of Russian swimming sure does look bright. Submitted by: philipmj24
May 19, 2010 Unreal. Is this kid headed to an American college program next year? If so, that coach will be wearing a Chesire cat grin all Summer! Huge future for this young man. Submitted by: outside smoke
May 20, 2010 Isn't he going to USC? Submitted by: justin pollard
May 21, 2010 Three years in the US and listen to how well he speaks English. We have professional athletes who were born and raised here and can't speak half as well.
Why is this? Submitted by: WEK5000
May 21, 2010 ...and he wants to swim for the United States. Submitted by: philipmj24
May 25, 2010 Can high school records really be set at USMS meets? The water in the usual 50 or 100 free heat at a masters meet is likely to be a lot smoother than the water in the 50 or 100 free at a serious high school championship meet. Since we are talking about differences measured in 100ths of a second, the smoother water could be that difference. Not being critical of the swimmer, just curious about the rules. Submitted by: CTL
May 25, 2010 This is one of the biggest confusions each year. The CIF section that hosts this meet has several other sectional championships. They wind up having a "Masters" championship afterwards that sort of serves as a special sectional championship. It's not a "Masters" championship in the USMS sense of the word. May 25, 2010 Thanks for the explanation Jason. I think a lot of us were wondering the same thing. Submitted by: GigEmAggies
