PHOENIX, Arizona, May 18. A pair of Swimming World superfans, who wish to remain anonymous, decided to take a statistical look at the impact of the recruiting class of 2009.
The study looked at how members of the Class of 2009 scored in this year's NCAA Division I Championships, as well as what Swimming World College Recruit Ranking each swimmer earned heading into the season.
In the end, 42 members of the Class of 2009 made the NCAA Division I Championships, while 34 of them scored either individually or as part of relays. A member of the Class of 2009 is defined as either a 2009 high school grad, first-year international swimmer, or a junior college transfer. Four-year college transfers are not counted as part of the Class of 2009.
Tom Shields of California, the reigning Swimming World High School Swimmer of the Year, easily pulled away as the top freshman this year. Additionally, California and Southern California had some of the top classes overall.

May 18, 2010 Brown, Clement, Rousseau, Marco Louhghran and possibly Andrew Gemme;l are all "ri ngers" in that they are foreign athletes, not domestically-grown products like Shields and Surhoff.
And both Brown and Marco have been swimming for their respective schools for nearly a year now although I think neither swam NCAAs last year but they were in school @ Auburn and Florida.
I think Marco's gonna be tough this summer both at Euros and Commonwealth Games. I'd say jury's still out on Adam Brown.
Rousseau could final in 200 fly @ CGs and Clement (France) has a shot at doing same at Budapest.
Will be interesting.
What'll be even mas interesting is to see if Shields can four-peat @ NCAAs in 100 fly a la Morales, Spitz and Crocker, particcularly if the current American/NCAA record-holder -- Austin Staab -- either reenrolls @ Stanford or goes someplace else.
And while he has yet to reach the tpp step of the podium,I'd say don't count out Auburn's Tyler McGill either. Submitted by: slickwillie32
May 19, 2010 Andrew Gemmell is an American athlete. If you remember from world championships he won silver for the USA in the 10k. Submitted by: adamg
May 19, 2010 Wow, and USC with Morozov and Bloch, among others, coming next year, are going to be getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 70% of their points from 1st and 2nd year swimmers. The future's bright in Southern Cal... Submitted by: GigEmAggies
May 19, 2010 Rite, Gemmell is an Amercan kid from Deleware who attends Georgia.
Scored in mile @ SECs.
Could be a contender one of these days. Submitted by: slickwillie32
May 19, 2010 What a disappointing freshman class for the top recruited class at Stanford. They only scored 4.5 of the points at NCAA. Hope Matt Thompson, Aaron Wayne and companies can come back with a big bang next year. Submitted by: BlueOcean
