Nineteen USMS National Records Broken at YMCA Masters Short Course Nationals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 19. DIANNA Uustal was the star of the 2010 YMCA Masters short course yards national championships last weekend, setting three USMS national records, while three others set two individual records each.

Uustal, 63 years old and representing North River, broke three national records formerly held by Ruth Shaps in the 60-64 age group. First, she touched in 33.47 in the 50 backstroke to erase Shaps' record of 33.95. Then, she swam a 1:14.65 in the 100 back to dip under Shaps' mark of 1:14.73. Her final act was to take Shaps' record of 31.72 in the 50 fly, doing so in a 31.59.

Adam Mania, a 2004 Olympian for Poland and NCAA All-American for the University of Wisconsin, set two national marks in the 25-29 age group. Mania, 26, swam a 21.84 in the 50 backstroke to erase Timothy Liebhold's record of 22.71. Later, in a time trial, Mania swam a 21.46 to lower the record further. Mania's other record came in the 100 back with a 45.95, taking down Andy Gill's record of 49.83 and surpassing Andy Grant's swim of 49.17, done the same weekend in California.

George Schmidt, 60, was another double record setter, doing so in the 60-64 age group. He became the oldest man to break the one-minute barrier in the 100 IM with his 59.18, erasing the record of 1:00.10 by Robert Strand. He also set a record in the 200 IM with a 2:12.14. The former record was 2:12.67 by Fred Schlicher.

Burwell "Bumpy" Jones, one of Swimming World Magazine's picks for World Masters Swimmer of the Year for 2009, set two national records as well. Jones, 77 and representing Sarasota Y, broke his own records in the 200 back and 200 IM for the 75-79 age group.. In the 200 back, he swam a 2:31.41, lowering his record of 2:32.21. His 200 IM time of 2:39.35 dipped under his record of 2:39.79.

Jack Groselle, who was honored as a runner-up in the listing of Swimming World's World Masters Swimmers of the Year for 2009, set a national record in the 200 free for the 55-59 age group. Groselle, 55 years old and representing Sarasota, swam a 1:49.76 to wipe out Jim McConica's record of 1:50.85.

Nan Bohl of Olathe set a record in the 50 breast for the 80-84 age group. She swam a 49.34 to take down her own record of 50.24.

Eight relay national records were also broken:

Schroeder Y in the women's 18+ 200 medley relay with a 1:48.95 (old record: 1:49.10);

Wilton in the women's 35+ 400 freestyle relay with a 3:39.45 (old record: 3:41.37);

Sarasota in the women's 45+ 400 freestyle relay with a 3:54.28 (old record: 3:55.16);

Wilton in the women's 45+ 200 medley relay with a 1:55.68 (old record: 1:57.99);

Schroeder in the men's 18+ 400 freestyle relay with a 3:05.05 (old record: 3:10.28);

Sarasota in the men's 55+ 400 freestyle relay with a 3:29.84 (old record: 3:33.75);

Broward in the men's 65+ 400 freestyle relay with a 4:03.39 (old record (4:05.92);

Schroeder in the mixed 18+ 200 medley relay with a 1:39.26 (old record: 1:40.03).
