British Gas Swimming Championships, Day One: Liam Tancock Posts World-Leading Time, Rebecca Adlington Swims Swift 200 Free

SHEFFIELD, England, March 29. LIAM Tancock posted a world-leading time in the men's 50 backstroke on the first night of long course finals at the British Gas Swimming Championships.

Tancock, the reigning world champion in the 50 back, posted a 24.52 in the semifinals to lead all qualifiers into the finals by 1.5 seconds. The time further cements Tancock's place atop the leaderboard in the 50 back, where he previously led the world with a 24.92 from the UK/Germany Duel in the Pool. Luke Wood was the second qualifier in the event with a 26.07. Ryan Bennett will go into tomorrow's finals as the third seed with a 26.20.

Four finals were swum in Sheffield on Monday evening. Rebecca Adlington posted the fourth-fastest time of the year in the women's 200 free final with a 1:57.87. The Australian threesome of Blair Evans, Bronte Barratt and Kylie Palmer all swam faster at the Australian nationals two weeks ago. Jazmin Carlin was second with a 1:58.51 and rounding out the podium was Joanne Jackson, who swam a 1:58.93 for third.

The men's 400 free gold medal went to Robbie Renwick, who posted a 3:50.32 for the seventh-fastest time of the year, just ahead of Peter Vanderkaay's 3:50.86 from the Austin Grand Prix. David Cary and Robert Bale rounded out the podium with times of 3:50.55 and 3:51.58, respectively.

Hannah Miley was the class of the field in the women's 200 IM final. Her 2:12.32 is the sixth-fastest of the year. Aimee Wilmott was second with a 2:14.25 and Anne Bochmann was third in 2:15.79.

The fourth final of the evening saw Michael Rock post a 1:56.86 in the 200 fly, which bumps Takeshi Matsuda out of the fourth place in the world best times of the year by one-hundredth of a second. Second place went to Roberto Pavoni with a 1:57.29, with Joseph Roebuck taking third with a 1:57.38.

In other semifinal action, Amy Smith led qualifiers in the women's 50 butterfly with a 27.34 and Achieng Ajulu-Bushell leads the field as the top qualifier in the women's 50 breast with a 31.04.

In multi-disability events, Eleanor Simmonds won the 400 freestyle with a 5:35.16 over Francesca O'Connor's 5:42.62. Jonathan Fox was the winner of the men's 400 freestyle with a 4:58.24, with Sam Hynd finishing second in 4:31.99. The men's 200 freestyle saw Benjamin Procter win with a 2:04.09, ahead of Daniel Pepper's 2:05.03. Natalie Massey won the women's 200 free with a 2:25.12 over Chloe Selman, who finished second with a 2:31.70.
