NCAA Division III Championships: Kenyon Men, Emory Women Lead After Day Three

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 19. THE third day of the NCAA Division III Championships concluded with two national records, while the Kenyon men increased their lead and the Emory women maintained theirs.

The Kenyon men have all but locked up their 31st consecutive national championship finishing tonight with 502 points. Emory and Denison are in a close race for second as Emory currently leads 222.5 to 212. Kalamazoo and TCNJ are battling for fourth with Kalamazoo currently leading 183 to 181. Amherst (151), MIT (132), Middlebury (131), Williams (105), and Washington University (90) are sixth through 10th.

The Emory women are ahead by 25.5 points as they lead Denison 371.5 to 346. Williams is third with 297 while Kenyon is fourth with 224. CMS rounds out the top five with 144. Amherst (114), TCNJ (95), UW La Crosse (84), Gustavus Adolphus (83), and Carthage College (78) round out the top 10.

Men's 200 Butterfly
John Dillon continued his dominance at the meet by winning the event and crushing the 13 year old national record going 1:45.01. After Dillon's year off he has stormed back onto the national scene with two individual championships to his credit. Emory swimmers finished second and third with John Petroff and Tom Dimarco going 1:48.92 and 1:49.30. Doug Huguenard of Kenyon finished fourth in 1:49.79.

Women's 200 Butterfly
Logan Todhunter of Williams won her third event in as many days narrowly breaking her own national record going 1:57.46. For the second year in a row she won the event by multiple body lengths. Teammate Bonnie Patchen was second in 2:01.82. Kenyon claimed third and fourth place with Hannah Saiz and Lauren Brady going 2:01.86 and 2:02.72 respectively.

Men's 100 Backstroke
Paul Ellis of Kalamazoo who was already the national record holder per his lead off leg in the 400 medley relay won in 48.36. John Thomas of Johns Hopkins was runner-up in 48.59. Peter Mullee of St. Thomas and Robert Barry of Denison finished third and fourth in 48.72 and 48.87. The top three finishers in the event were seniors which should leave the event wide open for next year.

Women's 100 Backstroke
Olivia Zaleski of Denison defended her 2009 title going 55.24 to win the event. Chelsea Hoff of UW La Crosse was second in 55.98. Katie Bilotti of CMS was third in 56.11 while Kristine Trutor of Keene State was fourth in 56.35.

Men's 100 Breaststroke
David Lazarus of Kenyon rocketed a 54.70 to win the event. Myles O'Connor of TCNJ finished runner-up in 55.15. Rory Buck of Whitworth and Pavel Buyanov of Staten Island were third and fourth with a 55.25 and a 55.27 respectively.

Women's 100 Breaststroke
Annie Perizzolo of CMS finished just off the meet record going 1:01.84 to win the event. Emory's tandem of April Whitley and Jen Aronoff went 2-3 in 1:03.50 and 1:03.75. Caitlin Lehberger of Westminster finished fourth in 1:03.79. Notably her teammate Courney Herdt won the consolation final with a time of 1:04.31, a time that would have placed her fifth.

Men's 1 Meter Diving
Nathan LaRowe of SUNY Potsdam won the event with 548.00 points. Brian Sobel of Springfield was second with 527.90. Nicholas Halbach of Merchant Marine was third with 520.70 and Eric Messina of SUNY Oswego was fourth with 490.60. The top five in the event just switched positions from their final results in the 3 meter.

Men's 800 Free Relay
Kenyon continued their relay domination of the meet by winning this relay by more than 5 seconds against Amherst. Ian Stewart-Bates, Zachary Turk, Blake Preston, and Kegan Borland clocked in at a time of 6:34.71 while Ryan Lichtenfels, Tim White, Ryan Colby, and Alex Fraser finished in 6:40.37. Washington University finished third with Alex Beyer, Kartik Anjur, Mark Minowitz, and David Chao finishing in 6:41.00. Denison, who won the event last year and holds the national record, finished fourth with Andy Catline, Bernard Chen, Joe Katich, and Dan Thurston going 6:41.75.

Women's 800 Free Relay
Denison just touched out defending champion and national record holder Emory to win the event and continue their strong relay performances at this years championship. Alyssa Swanson, Marit Wangstad, Emily Schroeder, and Hilary Calet clocked in at 7:21.23 while Ruth Westby, Whitley Taylor, Katie Mroz, and Liz Horvat clocked in at 7:21.84. Williams' team of Ellen Ramsey, Joanna Hoffman, Sophie Sequeira, and Caroline Wilson finished a distant third in 7:28.94 and Amherst finished fourth with Rebecca Thompson, Anna Haring, Emily Swett, and Kendra Stern, who clocked in at 1:44.99, in a final time of 7:29.73.

The meet concludes tomorrow with prelims beginning at 11AM ET with the 100 free, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 1650 free, women's 3 meter diving, 400 free relay.
