USA Swimming Sectionals, Federal Way: Sectional Records Fall Often

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 13. TONIGHT's finale session at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Federal Way featured several sectional records falling by the wayside in short course yard action.

Cascade's Annemarie Thayer touched out Lake Oswego's Grace Carlson, 53.84 to 53.86, in the women's 100 back. Both times beat the previous meet record of 53.98 set by Ariana Kukors back in 2007. Lake Oswego's Karen Turner took third in 54.18. Tiger Sharks' Jared Markham earned the men's 100 back triumph with a 49.19. Corvallis' Jacob Pebley posted a 49.72 for second place, while Denver's Kyle Milberg took third in 49.77.

Cascade's Amber McDermott followed in the women's 500 free with a 4:40.04. That time smashed the sectional mark of 4:44.86 set by Kukors back in 2007. Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin finished second in 4:42.00, while KING's Andie Taylor grabbed third in 4:42.77. All top three times cleared Kukors' record. Boulder's Steve Schmuhl downed a long-standing sectional record in the men's 500 free with a 4:23.80. That swim eclipsed the listed sectional record of 4:25.22 set by Sandy Blythe way back in 1982. Markham took second in 4:26.61, while Scottsdale's Tanner Roe finished third in 4:29.93.

KING's Megan Jendrick almost clipped her sectional record with a 59.06 to win the women's 100 breast. That time just missed her 2007 mark of 59.02. Colorado Stars' Kelly Naze finished second in 1:01.30, while Sun Devil's Katie Olsen earned third in 1:01.93. MAC's Eetu Karvonen chopped a second off the sectional record in the men's 100 breast with a 54.03. That swim beat Scott Usher's 2006 mark of 55.04. Atiba Wade posted a second-place time of 54.46. The 32-year-old beat Swimming World's Jeff Commings U.S. Masters Swimming national record of 55.85 for the 30-34 age division. He set the previous mark with a 55.85 in 2007. Thunderbolts' Gabriel Rooker took third in 56.34.

Naze returned in the women's 100 fly with a 53.31 to win. That time came up just short of her sectional record of 53.24 set during prelims, which beat the 53.86 set by Heather Brand back in 2007. Bearcat's Tori Simenec touched second in 53.66, while Taylor wound up third in 53.79. Neil O'Halloran of the Thunderbolts won the men's 100 fly in 48.62. Denver's Milberg took second in 49.61, while Aaron Young of the Thunderbolts placed third in 49.86.

Colorado Stars' Caroline Piehl, Franklin, Naze and Jordan Mattern topped the women's 400 free relay in 3:19.80. Franklin clocked a 48.21 during her second leg. KING's Jendrick, Amelia Messegee, Taylor and Rachel Kim took second in 3:22.32. Both times cleared the sectional record of 3:22.51 set by KING in 2007. Steven Ung, Aaron Young, O'Halloran and Morgon Henderson-Kunz snatched the men's 400 free relay title in 3:04.02.
