USA Swimming Sectionals, Federal Way: Missy Franklin Posts Blazing Times -- March 11, 2010

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 11. SHE's already been on the cover of Swimming World Magazine for her junior team efforts, but now Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin moved into a completely new stratosphere. This evening, at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Federal Way, Franklin had some huge time drops to move among names like Julia Smit. The meet is being held in short course yards.

Franklin first posted a lifetime best effort of 47.94 to jump from just inside the top 50 all time to a tie for 25th with Melanie Schlanger in the women's 100 free. Franklin's previous best had been a 48.39, which still stands as the national independent high school record in the event. Roseburg's Kaylin Bing placed second in 49.99, while Bearcat's Tori Simenec finished third in 50.18.

Franklin returned in the women's 200 back with a gigantic time drop from her previous best of 1:54.06 clocked in January. Franklin won the race with a blazing time of 1:51.07, which jumped her from the high 30s all time to sixth behind Julia Smit's 1:50.76. Cascade's Annemarie Thayer placed second in 1:56.33, while Mission Aurora's Bonnie Brandon posted a 1:57.42 for third.

Morgon Henderson-Kunz of the Thunderbolts touched out Boulder's Steve Schmuhl, 44.99 to 45.22, in the men's 100 free. Hilltop's McKay King rounded out the top three in 45.71. Tiger Shark Jared Markham followed with a 1:43.66 to win the men's 200 back. Corvallis' Jacob Pebley took second in 1:45.20, while Denver's Kyle Milberg finished third in 1:45.42.

KING's Megan Jendrick closed to within half-a-second of her best time in the women's 200 breast with a scorching time of 2:07.82. That effort fell just behind her personal best of 2:07.38 set in 2007. Colorado Star Kelly Naze placed a distant second in 2:13.27, while teammate Christine Wixted finished third in 2:15.12. MAC's Eetu Karvonen followed with a 1:57.24 in the men's 200 breast for the win. Gabriel Rooker of the Thunderbolts placed second in 2:01.29, while LONG's Connor Dwyer finished third in 2:04.80.

KING's Andie Taylor hit the wall in 1:57.06 in the women's 200 fly for the win, while Denver's Mackenzie Stein placed second in 1:57.99. Simenec grabbed third for the second time of the night with a 1:58.21. Neil O'Halloran of the Thunderbolts topped the men's 200 fly in 1:47.06. Bend's Mason Allen finished second in 1:50.46, while Milberg wound up third in 1:50.72.

KING's Joanna Wu, Jendrick, Taylor and Amelia Messegee topped the women's 200 medley relay with a 1:41.20. Jendrick clocked a swift 26.67 breaststroke leg. Meanwhile Franklin leadoff the Colorado Stars with a 25.52 en route to a 1:42.64 from the second-place squad comprised of Franklin, Wixted, Naze and Jordan Mattern. The Thunderbolts quartet of Steven Ung, Rooker, O'Halloran and Henderson-Kunz won the men's 200 medley relay in 1:32.62, while Denver's Milberg, Kyle Noser, Ben Holston and Daniel Jurgs finished second in 1:33.41.

March 12, 2010 As noted in the story, Missy Franklin's 1:51.07 200 back ranks her sixth-fastest performer all-time, 14th-best performance.

Her time is also FASTEWR than any college time ever swum @ ANY collegiate meet, conference championships or otherwise, save for Gemma Spofforth's 1:48.3 @ last year's SECs -- the U.S. Open/NCAA record) -- and Julia Smit's 1:50.76 from last weekend's Pac-10s.

The winning men's 200 back time (1:43.66 by Corvallis' Jared Markham) is also a 15-16 NAG record, breaking the old mark of 1:44.72 by Kip Darmody from last year.

The Uni ersity of Florida's Omar Pinzon is shown as No.1 all-time on the USS Top 100 list for 15-16 boys [1:44.05]but he can't hold the NAG record as he's Colombian. Only Americans are eligible to set/hold NAG reccrds.

Pinzon, now a Gator senior, has a pr of 1:39.50 from last year's NCAAs, fifth-fastest performer all-time among collegians.

Markham's old pr was 1:45.21 from last December's junior nationals @ Ohio State, site of this year's men's NCAA D1 Championships, so he's dropped nearly a second and-a-half in three months.

Watch out, Ryan, Aaron, Tyler!!!

March 12, 2010 Sorry, but Bill's typos are a bit much. First, no need to double-post. Second, the first post appears to contain multiple errors: apart from the obvious missing digit (I assume 4.39 is supposed to be 48.39), the second given time (1:54.06) seems to be for a 200 back, not a 100 back. Third, her time in the 200 is also slower than Natalie Coughlin's 1:49.52 from the 2002 NCAAs -- a swim which is the _current American Record_ if I'm not mistaken.

March 12, 2010 The part abuut Franklin's 200 back came out wrong.

What I wss trying to say is that her 1:51.07 is fasyer than any woman has ever swum in college competition -- with the exception of Gemma Spofforth @ last year's SECs/NCAAs, Julia Smit @ last month's Pac-10s and Natalie Coughlin @ NCAAs earlier in the decade.

Regardless...it's a remarkable performance for a 14-year-old.

Sorry 'bout the typos.
