North Dakota Boys High School State Championships

GRAND FORKS, North Dakota, March 9. THE North Dakota Boys High School State Championships took place March 4-5 at the Hyslop Sports Center on the campus of the University of North Dakota. Minot won the meet with 424 points, while Fargo North took second with 241. West Fargo ended up third with 233.5.

Bismark's Ian Ballantyne starred individually, winning the 200 IM (1:57.22) and 100 breast. In the 100 breast, Ballantyne clocked 58.11 in prelims, breaking the state record of 58.24 set by Minot's Matt Lowe back in 2002. Ballantyne returned in the finale to lower his record to 58.02. Ballantyne joined teammates Austin Schmidt, Thomas Stromme, and Josh Riepl on the 200 medley relay, which won in 1:39.28. Riepl went on to win the 50 free individually in 21.83.

Century's Dylan Sether also doubled, winning the 200 free (1:45.29) and 100 fly (53.54). Jamestown's Willy Marler grabbed first in the 100 free (48.28), and West Fargo's Ethan Doll took the 500 free (4:49.48). Fargo North's Obi Obembe earned the win in the 100 back in 53.19. Minot swept the 200 and 400 free relays; Brandon Hamel, Matt Schimke, Matt Nilson, and Alex Lucy won the 200 in 1:28.64, while Lucy, Schimke, Kalvin Brown, and Hamel took the 400 in 3:16.62. Mandan's Jordan Barth won one meter diving with 409.20 points.
