USA Swimming Sectionals, College Station: Gray Umbach Doubles, Several Meet Records Fall

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 5. THE Woodlands' Gray Umbach picked up a pair of titles, while several swimmers also lowered meet records at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in short course yards in College Station.

Texas A&M's Hannah Kinder led a trio of swimmers under the meet record in the women's 500 free with a 4:43.45. The Woodlands' Kelsey Leneave (4:43.48) and Palo Alto Stanford's Jasmine Tosky (4:44.05) also surpassed Allison Arnold's 2009 meet record of 4:45.87. The Woodlands' Ediz Yildirimer touched out Palo Alto Stanford's Adam Hinshaw, 4:24.22 to 4:24.65, in the men's 500 free. Both beat the meet record of 4:25.84 set by Caleb Veazey a year ago. Dallas Mustang Connor Nolan finished third in 4:26.82.

Mansfield's Melanie McClure topped the women's 200 back in 1:57.57, while COPS's Shirley Wang took second in 1:58.98. Dallas Mustangs Claire Brandt placed third in 1:59.35. The Woodlands' Gray Umbach followed in the men's 200 back with a winning 1:47.27. Teammate Kennedy Trotter placed second in 1:49.00, while Tiger's Grant Grenfell earned third in 1:49.67.

Palo Alto Stanford's Maddie Schaefer clipped the meet record in the women's 100 free with a 48.90. Her effort beat the 49.01 of Lily Moldenhauer set last year. That's not bad company considering Moldenhauer lowered a national high school public record earlier this year. Fort Worth's Julia Anderson placed second in 50.23, while Texas A&M's Allyson Sweeney took third in 50.28. Alamo Area's John Murray topped the men's 100 free in 44.82, while Fleet's Jonathan Edwards (45.30) and Charles Moore (45.58) completed the top three.

Another Moldenhauer meet record took a tumble in the women's 200 fly. Moldenhauer clocked a 1:58.38 last year. Tosky (1:56.29) and Conroe's Natalie Adams (1:56.51) scorched the mark in an exciting battle to the finish. Adams nearly caught Tosky down the stretch with a 30.61 final 50. Texas A&M's Jaclin Rehring placed third in 2:00.71. Umbach doubled up with a 1:48.20 in the men's 200 fly. Palo Alto Stanford's Tom Kremer took second in 1:48.36, while The Woodlands' Jonathan Debaugh placed third in 1:48.61.
