Speedo Western Championships: Chantal Vanlandeghem Shines, Dagny Knutson Gets Some Work

SASKATOON, Canada, February 19. THE second night of short course meter swimming at the Speedo Western Championships featured a strong performance by Chantal Vanlandeghem. Meanwhile, Dagny Knutson of the U.S. put in some work with a sojourn into the north.

Knutson decided to get some short course meter competition under her belt with a 4:38.07 to win the women's 400 IM at the meet. Deann Matthews finished second in 4:41.53, while Tiann Rissling placed third in 4:45.84. Knutson also finished fifth in the 100 back with a 1:02.15.

Vanlandeghem, 15, and Brooklyn Snodgrass, 15, put up the fastest times in the women's 100 back with times of 58.73 and 59.68, respectively. They did so out of the 15-and-under heat. Jessica Plant won the open crown with a 1:00.58, while Matthews (1:01.03) and Hanna Kubas (1:01.09) finished second and third. Braeden Newton won the men's 100 back in 55.21, while Brodie Dransutavicius took second in 56.28. Karl Wolk placed third in 56.35, while Joe Byram, 15, won the 16-and-under heat in 55.82.

Lindsay Delmar captured the women's 50 fly title in 27.22, while Samantha Corea (27.78) and Rebecca Terejko (27.83) placed second and third. Vanlandeghem continued her strong meet with a 27.26 in the 15-and-under heat. Chris Manning took home the men's 50 fly title in 24.64. Kyle Troskot placed second in 24.82, while Wolk earned a second podium with a third-place 25.33.

Rissling snagged the women's 200 breast title in 2:26.66, while Bronwyn Pasloski finished second in 2:30.00. Katie Mann placed third in 2:31.21. Mariya Chekanovych, 15, posted a 2:28.77 in the 15-and-under heat for the win. Nick Kostiuk, 16, raced to a 2:15.93 to win the 16-and-under heat in the men's 200 breast. Sean Nugent won the open title in 2:15.97, while Richard Funk (2:16.76) and Christopher Dalen (2:19.51) rounded out the top three.

Vanlandeghem kept on trucking with another strong finish. This time she clocked a 25.17 in the women's 50 free 15-and-under heat, topping the open-title winning time of 25.96 clocked by Sarah Sumner. Natasha Fung finished second in 26.01, while Terejko picked up her second podium with a third-place 26.11. Manning claimed his second title with a 22.43 in the men's 50 free. Troskot (22.89) and David Hibberg (23.03) touched second and third. Luke Peddie took the 16-and-under title in 22.87.

In relay action, Manta's Emily Doucette, Jessica Plant, Renee Deschenes and Vanlandeghem won the women's 400 free relay in 3:44.89. CASC's Wolk, James Kendrick, Daniel Blattler and Chad Bobrosky claimed the men's 400 free relay in 3:23.69.

Results from the men's 400 IM were not made available by meet management.
