Summit League Championships: Day Two

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 19. SENIOR Agnes Solan won the 100-yard backstroke (53.99, NCAA "B" Standard), swam on the first place 200 freestyle relay (1:42.53, school and meet record, NCAA "B" Cut) and broke the school and meet record in the 200 free on the first leg of the championship 800 free relay (7:32.78) for the Oakland University men's and women's swimming and diving teams on the second day of The Summit League Championships.

Solan time of 1:47.92 on the opening leg of the 800 free relay was a school and meet record and hit the NCAA "B" Cut. Recording NCAA "B" Cuts and first place finishes was sophomore Anders Jensen in the 100 back (48.20) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Solan, sophomore Johanna Gustafsson, freshman Sandra Czerska and sophomore Alyssa Vela.

On the men's side, Oakland, which led by only 12 points after yesterday, has 564.5 points and leads by 176.5 points over Centenary College (388). Eastern Illinois is third with 370 points followed by South Dakota State (4th – 262.5), South Dakota (5th – 233), Western Illinois (6th – 196) and IUPUI (7th – 129).

On the women's side, Oakland has 605 points to increase its lead to 304 points over South Dakota State (301). Centenary College is third with 281 points followed by South Dakota (4th – 256), Eastern Illinois (5th – 252), Western Illinois (6th – 248) and IUPUI (7th – 129).

"We swam pretty well tonight," said head coach Pete Hovland. "The women are just rolling along. Agnes had an amazing performance tonight. The men bounced back from a tough first night. Everyone is on the same page and we are starting to get the engine really moving. Tonight is more like we know we can swim."

For the men, sophomore Joe Rodgers came from behind to edge senior Eddie Toro to win the 400 individual medley. His victory by 75/100th of a second, ending Toro's bid to become the second swimmer to win four titles in the event. Rodgers time was fifth fastest in OU history.

The Golden Grizzlies received first place performances from freshman Alex Aceino in the 100 butterfly (49.19, 8th fastest in OU history), senior Mike Templeton in the 200 free (1:38.99), sophomore Scott Yarbrough in the 100 breaststroke (55.76), the 200 medley relay of Jensen, Yarbrough, Aceino and sophomore Ben Vavra (1:30.52) and the 800 free relay of Templeton, senior Pat Downing, Jensen and sophomore Tim Montague (6:44.72).

Second place finishes came from Downing in the 200 free (1:40.21), Templeton in the 100 back (50.65) and Toro in the 400 IM (3:58.97). Templeton swam 57.24 in the prelims of the 100 back, the fifth fastest time in OU history.

For the women, individual wins came from freshman JulieAnne Stears in the 400 IM (4:27.06, 5th fastest in OU history) and freshman Sandra Czerska in the 100 fly (54.84, 2nd fastest in OU history). The Golden Grizzlies also won the 800 free relay with Solan, junior Lauren Patterson, senior Sarah Ludema and Vela.

Second place finishes came from freshman Alyssa Busch in the 100 back (55.85, 3rd fastest in OU history), Gustafsson in the 100 breast (1:03.84, 4th fastest in OU history), junior Chelsea Oates on the 3-meter springboard (301.55 points), Patterson in the 200 free (1:53.17) and sophomore Nicole Salmeto in the 100 fly (56.80, 7th fastest in OU history)
