CCSA Championships: Day One

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, February 18. AFTER day one of the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., Florida Gulf Coast's women's swimming is in the lead with 232 points, Davidson is in second with 218 points and Gardner-Webb is third at 160.5. On the men's side, Davidson is first with 276 points, College of Charleston is in second at 254 points and Gardner-Webb is right behind in the third spot at 205.

Davidson's women's 200 freestyle relay team of Emily Castle, Jean DeOrnellas, Casey Van Tassell and Lindsey Martin took the first final of the night with a new CCSA record winning with a time 1:33.37. Gardner-Webb (Elizabeth Carter, Sarah Steadman, Kristen Sellers and Corey Hughey) finished in a close second touching in 1:34.16, just inching defending event champion Florida Gulf Coast (Line Lauridsen, Kori Golden, Leah Daniel and Vicky Cadge), who grabbed third with a time of 1:34.35. On the men's side, Davidson's 200 freestyle relay team of Geoff Peitz, Patrick Whitman, Wills Cooper and Bryan Droll repeated as event champions with a time of 1:21.77. Coming in second was College of Charleston (Randy Buchanan, Patrick Jones, Brantley Reynolds and Matthew Sherrier)with a time of 1:22.75, while Gardner-Webb (Kevin Koenig, George Partin, Collin Burchins and DJ Hughes) took third-place (1:23.45).

In the women's 500 freestyle, North Florida's Lyn Ann Nelson took top honors with a NCAA B-cut time of 4:50.67. Finishing in a close second was defending event champion Leah Daniel from Florida Gulf Coast with a time 4:51.94, followed by Davidson's Jessica Delgehausen in third (4:56.99). College of Charleston's Matthew Sherrier captured the men's 500 freestyle final with a time of 4:30.38. Second-place went to Davidson's Curtis Chaney (4:35.93), while Eric Craig of College of Charleston finished in third (4:38.16).

Florida Gulf Coast's Myriam Plante captured the women's 200 individual medley title with a new CCSA record of 2:02.63. Teammate Vicky Cadge took second-place with a time of 2:03.86, while Rachel Warkentin of Gardner-Webb rounded out the top-three touching in 2:04.89. Another CCSA record was set in the men's 200 individual medley, as Randy Buchanan of College of Charleston took top honors for the third consecutive year with a NCAA B-cut time of 1:47.47. Taking second was Drew Onken of Davidson touching in 1:49.56, while teammate Geoff Peitz finished in third-place with a time of 1:50.07.

After breaking her CCSA record in the women's 50 free in the morning prelims, Davidson's Lindsey Martin bested her time once again taking her third-straight event title with a NCAA B-cut time of 22.57. Corey Hughey of Gardner-Webb finished in second with a time of 22.96, while Georgia Southern's Courtney Martz took third-place with a time of 23.02. Also breaking the CCSA record in morning prelims with a time of 20.43, Davidson's Bryan Droll took top honors in the evening finals with a time of 20.49. Coming in a close second was teammate Patrick Whitman (20.86), followed by Gardner-Webb's Kevin Koenig (20.91)

In the diving finals, Florida Gulf Coast swept the top-three spots in the women's 1-meter diving with Karmin McNamara capturing the title for the second year with a score of 232.80. Teammates Gaby Shaw took second with 228.66 points, while Kamryn McNamara finished third with a score of 221.28. In the men's 3-meter diving, Davidson's Ben Lane took home the gold for the second consecutive year with a CCSA Championship record score of 311.25. Peter Gibbons of College of Charleston took silver with 251.19 points, while teammate Jeffrey Jankowski finished with bronze with a score of 203.67.

Closing out day one, the Gardner-Webb 400 medley relay team of Corey Hughey, Kim Zachensky, Rachel Warkentin and Elizabeth Carter captured first-place in a CCSA record time of 3:42.32. Coming in second was Davidson (Kelsi Hobbs, Caroline Curtiss, Emily Castle and Lindsey Martin), clocking in at 3:47.28 and closing out the event in third was Florida Gulf Coast (Viktoria Hyddmark, Dani Beaubrun, Danielle Butler and Line Lauridsen) finishing in 3:47.67. On the men's side, Davidson's team of Geoff Peitz, Drew Onken, Miller Williams and Bryan Droll placed first with a new CCSA record time of 3:19.62. College of Charleston (Chris Rogers, Randy Buchanan, Greg Greer and Matthew Sherrier) took second-place with a time of 3:20.87 and Gardner-Webb (Samuel Woods, Collin Burchins, Steven Caudill and George Partin) finished in third touching in 3:22.82.

The 2010 CCSA Championships resume Friday beginning with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. The events being contested on Day 2 include 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, men's 1-meter diving and 800 freestyle relay.
