CIS Championships: Colin Russell Downs 1992 Meet Record, Zack Chetrat Doubles

TORONTO, Canada, February 19. THE second evening of short course meter swimming at the Canadian Interuniversity Sports Championships featured a longstanding meet record taking a tumble.

Colin Russell shattered the meet record in the men's 50 free with a sterling time of 21.73. That performance crushed the 22.01 set by Brad Creelman way back in 1992. His time also neared Brent Hayden's Canadian record of 21.34 set last year. Ryan Gow took second in 22.24, while Martyn Forde placed third in 22.35.

Zack Chetrat turned in a 3:50.34 to capture the men's 400 free, while David Woodman earned second in 3:50.96. Steven Bielby wound up third overall in 3:51.00. Chetrat doubled up in the men's 200 fly with a 1:56.70. David Sharpe finished second in 1:58.53, while Jordan Hartney placed third in 1:59.43.

Katy Murdoch raced to victory in the women's 100 back with a time of 59.31, while Andrea Jurenovskis finished second in 1:00.72. Chrystelle Roy L'Ecuyer completed the top three in 1:01.13. Andrew Ford followed in the men's 100 back with a winning 54.01. Sharpe touched second in 54.21, while Cam Cummings earned third in 54.47.

Chantique Payne touched out Sarah Taylor, 27.34 to 27.47, for the women's 50 fly title. Charlotte Dandurand placed third in 27.65, while Audrey Lacroix faded to fourth in 27.69. The men's 50 fly proved to be exciting with Eric Cantin touching out Mike Smerek, 24.36 to 24.39. Mark Maizonnasse took third in 24.85.

Kevyn Peterson cruised in the women's 400 free with a winning time of 4:08.71, while Pamela Ruksys posted a distant second-place 4:12.92. Brittany Cooper grabbed third in 4:15.58.

Martha McCabe dominated the women's 200 breast in 2:21.91 with teammates Hanna Pierse (2:26.26) and Laura Thompson (2:28.93) completing the top three. Jason Block took home the men's 200 breast in 2:10.07, while Bryn Jones grabbed second in 2:11.81. Marco Monaco snatched third in 2:12.52.

Erica Morningstar just missed her meet record of 25.17 in the women's 50 free with a winning 25.21. Hayley Nell and Marie-Pier Ratelle tied for second with matching 25.51s. Lacroix bounced back from a fourth-place finish in the sprint fly with a winning effort of 2:09.37 in the women's 200 fly. Erin Miller touched second in 2:11.50, while Jessica Johnson took third in 2:13.60.
