CIS Championships: Genevieve Saumur Sets Pace, Wins Two Titles

TORONTO, Canada, February 18. DURING the first night of short course meter swimming at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships, Genevieve Saumur captured a pair of individual titles.

Saumur opened the first evening of the meet with a winning time of 1:57.34 in the women's 200 free, while Kevyn Peterson (1:58.15) and Katy Murdoch (1:58.73) completed the top three. Chrystel Roy L'Ecuyer wound up fourth in 1:58.97. Saumur doubled up with a touch-out triumph over Murdoch, 28.10 to 28.13, in the women's 50 back. Bethany Flemington wound up third in 28.77.

Colin Russell cruised in the men's 200 free for the title in 1:45.04. David Woodman touched second in 1:47.37, while Adam Szoo finished third in 1:47.48. David Sharpe claimed the men's 50 back crown in 25.17, while Dan Langlois placed third in 25.28. Cam Cummings picked up third in 25.71.

Erica Morningstar raced to victory in the women's 100 breast with a 1:06.71. Martha McCabe turned in a second-place 1:07.30, while Kayla Voytechek earned third in 1:08.43. Jason Block snatched the men's 100 breast in 59.42, while Bryn Jones finished second in 1:01.10. Bogdan Knezevic placed third in 1:01.11.

Audrey Lacroix dropped a 59.79 in the women's 100 fly for the win. Erin Miller went 1:00.46 for second-place honors, while Chantique Payne rounded out the top three in 1:00.90. Zack Chetrat paced the men's 100 fly finale with a 53.50, while Sharpe earned his second podium of the night with a 53.82. Mike Smerek garnered third-place honors with a 53.89.

Hanna Pierse dominated the women's 400 IM in 4:40.45, while Jessica Johnson finished a full five seconds behind with a second-place 4:45.45. Sarah-Lee Hevey grabbed third in 4:45.81. Jordan Hartney snagged the men's 400 IM title in 4:14.08, winning a tight contest with Steven Bielby. Bielby clocked a 4:14.72 for second, while David Dimitrov took third in 4:16.39.

In relay action, Murdoch, Morningstar, Peterson and Seanna Mitchell notched a convincing win with a 3:40.36 in the women's 400 free relay. The foursome of Ryan Gow, Brad Hankewich, Colin Miazga and David Woodman claimed the men's 400 free relay title in 3:17.63.
