North Carolina 4A High School State Championships -- February 16, 2010

CARY, North Carolina, February 16. AT the North Carolina 4A State Championships, the East Chapel Hill girls won the state title with 231 points. Cary took second (144) and Panther Creek placed third (134). Providence won for the boys (257), while North Mecklenburg, Lake Norman and South Mecklenburg went head-to-head for second place. North Mecklenburg finished in second with 188 points while Lake Norman took third by only one point (184) over South Mecklenburg.

Girls Results

Victoria Mitchell, Torrey Bussey, Caroline Mills, and Mary Jessie Densmore (Cary) opened up the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.51. Bussey also had individual wins in the 200 IM (2:01.07) and the 100 breaststroke. She set a state record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.17.

Sarah Henry (West Johnston), who is a six-star recruit in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings, set state records in the 200 and 500 freestyles. She clocked a time of 1:47.97 in the 200 freestyle, surpassing last year's record (1:49.65) set by Panther Creek's Henriette Stenkvist (this year's 100 freestyle champion in 51.13). Henry also posted a state record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.69. The previous record (4:48.23) was set in 1999 by Cara Lane of Providence.

East Chapel Hill's Meghan Smith, Supriya Davis, Lisa Zou, and Dania Marinshaw won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.14.

Julie Doran of Holly Springs won the diving competition with a score of 448.90 followed by Providence's Madaline Keeley (385.95) and Middle Creek's Madeline Martin (375.90).

Junior Sabrina Benson (Broughton) was a dual event winner in the 50 freestyle (23.39) and the 100 backstroke. She set a state record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.40. The previous record (54.95) was set last year by Carly Smith of Chapel Hill.

Stenkvist, Claire Liu, Kristin Connors, and Ellie Billman closed the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.67).

Boys Results
Providence won two of three relays. Kip Darmody, Anderson Sloan, Kevin Glenn, and Kyle Darmody (50 freestyle champion in 21.42) set a state record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.67.

Senior Matt Taylor (Sanderson) won the 200 and 100 freestyles with times of 1:39.81 and 46.28 respectively.

Green Hope's Dominick Glavich won the 200 IM (1:48.36) and the 100 breaststroke. He set a state record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.24. The previous record (56.75) was set last year by East Rowan's Tanner Lowman.

Kip Darmody set a meet record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 49.12. He teamed up with Sloan, Ryan Wilkinson, and Kyle Darmody for a win in the 200 freestyle relay. The foursome set a state record with a time of 1:25.51.

Ryan Hawkins of East Gaston won the diving competition with a score of 605.50. Charlie Retter (East Chapel Hill) placed second (446.05) and Sazzy Gourley (Myers Park) took third (395.00).

Lake Norman's Tyler Hill, Reed Wheeler, Michael Blinn, and Logan Heck closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:10.33).
