Utah 3-4A High School State Championships

PROVO, Utah, February 9. THE first High School State Championships of 2010 took place this weekend at Brigham Young University in Utah.

Team Scores
At the 3A meet, the Judge Memorial Catholic girls took first with 380 points. Park City and Wasatch followed with scores of 372 and 275, respectively. On the boys' side, Park City won the state title (339) while Wasatch took second (320) and Juan Diego Catholic placed third (251).

The Logan High School girls won the state title at the 4A meet with 300.5 points. Olympus scored 200 points for second, while Timpview settled for third with 192 points. The Mountain Crest High School boys took first (333), followed by Springville (308) and Box Elder (167).

3A Results
The Park City girls won two of three relays. Hailey Shand, Jessica Stobaugh, Mia Greenwald, and Marissa Bell teamed up for a win in the 200 medley relay (1:54.22). Shand also took first in the 100 back (1:02.22) while Bell won the 200 IM (2:20.21).

Junior Lydia Jones (Judge Memorial Catholic) had individual wins in the 200 (2:00.68) and 500 (5:27.29) freestyles.

Kristen Anderson, Kris Ranson, Mary Kathryn Brown, and Veronica Hunsaker (Wasatch) won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.43.

Juan Diego Catholic's Kelsey Leeson was a dual event winner in the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 25.18 and 55.67, respectively.

Greenwald won the 100 butterfly (59.63). She joined Bell, Shand, and Sara Testa for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.64).

On the boys' side, Juan Diego Catholic opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Phillip Hojnacki, Yuma Miyai, Issac Vincent, and Bryce Finley clocked a time of 1:43.84 for the win.

Park City's Griffin Pool won the distance events with times of 1:48.90 (200 freestyle) and 4:54.34 (500 freestyle).

Senior Eric Birkin (Wasatch) had individual wins in the 200 IM (2:06.56) and the 100 butterfly (56.18). He teamed up with Paul Mair, Aren Burkemo, and Jordan Martin for a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.95).

Oliver Diamond (Judge Memorial Catholic) took first in the 50 (21.44) and 100 (46.98) freestyles.

Sophomore Hayden Peterson (Park City) won the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.33. He joined Pool, Dusty Ragland, and Wesley Smith for a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:21.76).

4A Results
The Sky View girls opened the 4A meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Mickensi Didericksen, Shaelynn Bodrero, Cassie Wiser, and Laura Mortenson clocked a time of 1:53.28 for the win.

Senior Janessa Gammill (Logan) won the 200 (1:58.22) and 500 (5:25.31) freestyles.

Rachel Spencer (Olympus) had individual wins in the 50 freestyle (24.64) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.16).

Freshman Shaylee Howard took first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.73. She teamed up with Spencer, Melissa Hofmann, and Sara Ference for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.96).

Mountain Crest's Meghan O'Very was a dual event winner in the 200 IM (2:13.82) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.46).

Emily Ference joined Howard, S. Ference, and Spencer for a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:47.29).

The Mountain Crest boys won two of three relays. Jake Taylor, Jay Herzog, Tyler Keller, and Timmy Bates set a state record with a time of 1:37.26. The previous record of 1:37.54 was set in 1998 by Hunter's P. Jolley, J. Robinson, B. Stuart, and T. Huff. Bates also won the 100 freestyle (48.38) and the 100 backstroke (54.06).

Taylor, a senior, was a dual event winner in the 50 freestyle (20.93) and the 100 breaststroke (57.80). He earned an All-America cut in the 50 freestyle and qualified for Junior Nationals in the 100 breaststroke.

Springville's Cody Fullmer, Kolby Hargett, Jefferson McClain, and Shane Williams took first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.99).

Calvin Clark (Springville) had individual wins in the 200 IM (1:57.90) and the 500 freestyle (4:43.77).

Bates, Keller, William Watts, and Taylor set a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.68. The previous record (3:14.50) was set in 1976 by East's Clark, Slighting, Masters, and Neville.
