Povoa de Varzim: Mercedes Peris Minguet, Amit Ivry, Susana Negri Set Meet Records on Final Day

PORTO, Portugal, February 7. THE second of two days of long course meter swimming came to an end at the Povoa de Varzim meet in Portugal. Three more meet records fell by the wayside.

Mercedes Peris Minguet crushed the meet record in the women's 50 back with a 28.93. The previous mark had been a 29.47 from Stefania Cartapani last year. Minguet closed to within a second of her national record of 28.10 set last April. Cartapani took second in 29.93, while Marta Vieira Marinho placed third in 30.41.

Israel's Amit Ivry continued her strong meet with a meet record in the women's 100 fly. Her 58.96 smashed her 59.83 set last year. She also put her national record of 58.21 from last year on notice. Sara Freitas Oliveira touched second in 1:01.35, while Sara Francisco Cruz picked up third in 1:03.03.

Ivry doubled up with a 26.74 in the women's 50 free. Claudia Sofia Monteiro placed second in 26.97, while Ana Pinho Rodrigues took third in 27.07.

Susana Negri posted a meet record in the women's 800 free with an 8:51.99. That swim demolished the record of 8:56.08 set by Giulia Bolgiani last year. Bolgiani finished second in 8:58.74, while Maria Miguel Veloso took third in 9:13.51.

Paulo Jorge Santos opened up the final day with a winning time of 51.86 in the men's 100 free. Joao Felipe Carvalho finished second overall in 52.48, while James Barbiere claimed third in 52.59. Ludovica Leoni followed with a touch-out victory over Marinho, 2:05.50 to 2:05.55, in the women's 200 free. Efrat Rotztejn placed third in 2:06.71.

Kevin Swander earned his second victory of the meet with a 28.30 in the men's 50 breast. Davide Cova finished well behind in 29.74 for second, while Gil Goncalves Pinto placed third in 30.30. Yuliya Banach touched out Israeli teammate Anastasia Korotkov, 1:11.78 to 1:11.94, in the women's 100 breast. Rodrigues completed the top three in 1:12.32.

Israel went 1-2 again in the men's 100 back with a top-two sweep from Yakov-Yan Zurablov (55.50) and Jonatan Josef Kopelev (57.21). Ben Hesen rounded out the podium in 57.76. Giacomo Gremizzi claimed the men's 200 fly in 2:06.10. Miguel Monteiro Diogo finished second in 2:07.34 with Diogo Parrilha da Silva grabbing third in 2:08.41.

Marcos Rivera Miranda won the men's 400 free in 3:58.38, while Matteo Montanari finished second in 4:00.45. Barbiere snared his second podium of the day with a third-place 4:03.02. Korotkov cruised in the women's 200 IM for a winning time of 2:20.88. Leoni took second in 2:22.54, while Nadia Morais Vieira touched third in 2:22.93.

Cova denied Swander a breaststroke sweep with a 2:19.61 to 2:20.12 victory over the American in the men's 200 breast. Oliveira wound up third in 2:23.97. Rudy Goldin walked away with the men's 50 fly title in 25.48. Matteo Salomoni picked up second in 25.54, while Zurablov placed third in 25.55.

Leoni earned the women's 200 back title in 2:20.95, while Filipa Mendes Pinheiro (2:22.23) and Adriana Correia Lopes (2:23.61) completed the podium. Gremizzi doubled up with a 4:28.27 in the men's 400 IM. Cova took second in 4:28.35, while Pedro Miguel Pinotes finished third in 4:35.48.

In relay action, David Gamburg, Kopelev, Taj Hanani and Zurablov won the men's 400 medley relay for Israel in 3:50.58.
