North Carolina State vs. North Carolina -- February 6, 2010

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, February 6. THE Tar Heel swimmers and divers hosted the Wolfpack from N.C. State at Koury Natatorium Friday night for Senior Night. Both the men and women came away with wins Friday night against their rivals from Raleigh. The women won with a score of 185-111 and the men 182-111 in the final dual meets of the season for North Carolina.

Carolina's men finished the year 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The women capped a 6-1 ACC campaign and finished up with a 9-2 overall mark. Both teams will host the ACC Championships in Koury Natatorium with the women competing February 17-20 and the men February 24-27.

The Tar Heels honored their senior class before the swim meet recognizing the seven swimmers and one diver. The senior class includes Austin Bradyhouse, Hank Browning, Eliza Butts, Alison Clemens, Ashley Howard, Jeff James, Jason McLaughlin and Megan Steeves .


"This senior class is a great group. They have seen a lot of change. They have been through many ups and downs, but we have all worked for one purpose and one goal which is to represent UNC in the best fashion and at the highest level," said head coach Rich DeSelm.

"There are some great students, good leaders, multiple NCAA qualifiers and ACC top eight finalists in that class," said DeSelm. "The leadership and the experience they have, you can't teach that. I am really proud of them."

The women went 1-2-3 in the 200-medley relay to start off the meet. The men followed the women's strong start with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200-medley relay.

The 1000-yard freestyle was a dynamic race for freshman Jackie Rudolph who went a career best time of 9:56.05. She also went a career best time for her first 500 yards of the race flipping at 4:56.34. Rudolph touched in first for the 1000, followed by teammate Ashley Miller in second with a time of 10:03.87.

The UNC men had two strong swims in the 1000-yard freestyle as well. Sean Lane touched in first with a season best time of 9:15.43 and Jesse Mendes came in second, also with a season best time of 9:25.90.

The women swept the 200-yard freestyle led by Katura Harvey who touched in first with a time of 1:50.74. Freshman Carly Smith finished in second after leading the majority of the race. Eliza Butts finished in third for the Tar Heels.

The men's 200-yard freestyle was a close race between two Tar Heels, Tyler Harris and Hank Browning. Harris got his hand on the wall first in a time of 1:38.86 followed by Browning with a time of 1:39.46. Both times are season bests for Harris and Browning.

Sophomore Jim Flannery went a career best time in the 100-yard backstroke touching in 49.04 and took first place. Senior Jeff James followed in second and freshman Pat O'Donovan was third. All three men achieved season best times.

Sophomore Katie Keel stepped up in the 100-yard breaststroke by going a career best time of 1:01.97, which is also a NCAA-B qualifying time. Keel was followed by sophomore Laura Moriarty in second, senior Alison Clemens in third and sophomore Layne Brodie in fourth.

On the men's side, junior Tyler Smith finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a season best time of 55.90. Flynn Jones touched in second with a season best time of 56.40.

Sophomore Laura Ruscoe had a season best swim in the 200-yard butterfly, touching first with a time of 2:00.94. Teammate Katie Nolan followed in second place. Senior Jason McLaughlin celebrated his Senior Night with a first-place finish and a season best time of 1:48.29 in 200-yard butterfly.

Rebecca Kane won the 50-yard freestyle for the women with a time of 23.24. Steve Cebertowicz took the win for the men in a time of 20.63 followed by teammate Evan Reed, who finished second with a season best time of 20.87.

In the 100-yard freestyle, sophomore Sarah List went a career best time of 51.40 touching in third behind Senior Megan Steeves, who finished in second with a time of 51.39. Junior Alex Ismail took the win in the 100-yard free for the men with a season best time of 45.60 followed in second by sophomore Brad Hamilton.

Carly Smith was five-tenths of a second off her season best time in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in first in a time of 1:57.84. Fellow freshman Rebecca Brooks touched in second behind Smith.

Jim Flannery won his second event of the night in the 200-yard backstroke with a season best time of 1:47.54. Freshman Mike Mohr touched in second with another season best time of 1:51.08.

The four fastest swims in the 100-yard butterfly were by Tar Heel swimmers. Katie Nolan finished in first with a time of 55.53 followed by Laura Ruscoe with a season best time of 55.94 and Kerianne McAfee at 55.98.

Sophomore Marie Pesacreta swam a career best time in the 400-yard IM, touching in first with a time of 4:16.34. Pesacreta's time is also a NCAA-B qualifying time. Tyler Harris finished first in the men's 400-yard IM with a season best time of 3:50.79. Harris was followed by teammates Andy Brake, Tom Luchsinger and Joe Kinderwater, respectively.

Sophomore Jenna Moore placed first on the 3-meter board with 287.55 points and freshman Chay Mavasio finished first on the 1-meter board with a score of 284.33. Freshman Ryland Jones finished first for the men's divers on the 1-meter with a score of 325.50 and he was second on the 3-meter with 338.33.

Twenty Tar Heel swimmers will compete in their peak meet Saturday and Sunday in the Triangle College Cup at Koury Natatorium.
