California vs. Southern California

LOS ANGELES, California, February 3. SOPHOMORE Marcin Tarczynski and freshman Adam Hinshaw each won two events, and five other Golden Bears were victorious, as the No. 6-ranked Cal men's swimming and diving team upended No. 5 USC, 165-125, Friday (Feb. 3) at McDonald's Swim Stadium in Los Angeles.
Cal has now improved its record to 4-1 and defeated a Trojan squad that had some of the fastest times in the nation coming into the Pac-12 dual meet. Tarczynski, a native of Warsaw, Poland, captured both the 100 (48.18) and 200 back (1:46.31), while Hinshaw, from Saratoga, won the 500 (4:27.79) and 1000 free (9:10.19).

Other individual champions for the Bears were junior standout Tom Shields in the 200 free (1:35.67), senior Martin Liivamagi in the 100 breast (54.72), freshman Will Hamilton in the 200 fly (1:46.67) and junior Trevor Hoyt in the 200 breast (1:59.89). Cal also captured the three-meter diving title with sophomore Tyler Pullen scoring 324.75, and won the opening 200 medley relay (1:28.32, senior Mathias Gydesen, senior Nolan Koon, Shields, sophomore Shayne Fleming).

The Bears finished 1-2-3 in both the 100 and 200 breast. Koon (55.27) and Hoyt (55.71) were second and third, respectively in the 100 breast. Koon (2:02.85) and freshman Christian Higgins (2:04.39) were second and third in the 200 breast.

Sophomore Jeremy Bagshaw was second behind Hinshaw in both 500 (4:28.07) and 1000 free (9:11.24), and the Bears' 200 medley relay team of Tarczynski, Liivamagi, junior Austin Brown and Tyler Messerschmidt was second behind their Cal teammates with a mark of 1:29.32.

Cal swam the last three swimming events as exhibitions. The Bears will next return to McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 4 to swim exhibition races as USC hosts Stanford in a Pac-12 dual meet.

USC sophomore Vladimir Morozov broke his own pool record in the 50y free and also won the 100y free to pace the No. 5 USC men's swimming and diving team in a loss to No. 3 Cal, 165-125, on Friday (Feb. 3) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium.

No. 6 Stanford also participated in the competition, though in exhibition races only. USC will score against the Cardinal on Saturday at noon while the Bears compete in exhibition.

Morozov erased his 14-month-old pool record (19.71) in the 50y free with a 19.49, well ahead of Cal's second-place Tyler Messerschmidt. Trojan senior Jeff Daniels was third (20.35).

After the diving break, Morozov came back to win the 100y free in 43.21 while Messerschmidt was second again and Stanford's David Nolan was third (44.77).

Cal opened the meet with a win in the 200y medley relay as Mathias Gydesen, Nolan Koon, Tom Shields and Shayne Fleming won in 1:28.32. USC's unit of junior Alex Lendrum, freshman Sergio Lujan Rivera and sophomores Chase Bloch and Morozov led USC's finish in fourth (1:29.58).

Stanford senior Chad La Tourette, the three-time defending Pac-10 champion in the mile and the 2010 NCAA champion in the race, controlled the 1000y free from start to finish and won in 9:10.19. Cal's Adam Hinshaw (9:10.19) and Jeremy Bagshaw (9:11.24) followed while Trojan freshman Chad Bobrosky was fourth (9:27.45).

Sophomore Dimitri Colupaev squared off against Cal's Tom Shields in the 200y free. Colupaev, ranked first in the nation, led through the first 100 yards but Cal's Tom Shields, ranked third, overtook him leading into the final 50 and won in 1:35.67. Stanford's Aaron Wayne came back for second (1:36.72) while Colupaev touched third (1:37.84).

Marcin Tarczynski of Cal won the 100y back in 48.18 while Gydesen was second (48.82) and Lendrum was third (49.02). The Bears' Martin Liivamagi (54.72) and Koon (55.27) went 1-2 in the 100y breast while Trojan freshman Andrew Malone was USC's top finisher (57.48).

Cal's Will Hamilton won the 200y fly in 1:46.67 while Trojan junior Justin DiFederico was second (1:49.50) and Cal's Austin Brown took third (1:49.58).

Lendrum, ranked second in the country, led the 200y back by almost a second after 100 yards but Cal's Tarczynski closed after 150. Tarczynski crept out in front with 25 to go and won in 1:46.31 to Lendrum's 1:46.47 while Stanford's Drew Cosgarea was third (1:47.45).

Cal went 1-2 in the 200y breast with Trevor Hoyt (1:59.89) and Koon (2:02.85). Shaw was third (2:03.80). USC was topped by Malone in fifth (2:07.04).

Cal's Hinshaw won the 500y free in 4:27.79 with teammate Jeremy Bagshaw taking second (4:28.07). Bobrosky topped USC's finishers in fourth (4:29.47).

Shields, with the top time in the nation, won the 100y fly in 46.53 in a pool record (besting Arizona's Lyndon Ferns' 2004 record of 47.25). The fight was for second, which went to Stanford's Geoff Cheah (48.36). USC junior Matt Voell led Trojan finishers in 50.58.

Cal's Liivamagi controlled the 200y IM and won in 1:48.70. His teammate Hinshaw won in 1:50.52 while Stanford's Curtis Lovelace was third (1:51.00) and Colupaev fourth (1:51.08).

The Bears won the 400y free relay in 2:57.29 while Morozov led a USC rally for second (2:58.26) and Stanford took third (2:59.74).

Freshman Jordan Gear topped the competing divers today in the 1-meter with 304.20 while Cal's Tyler Pullen was second (270.15). In 3-meter, Pullen took first (324.75) with teammate Grayson Huston second (308.60).
