KENOSHA, Wisconsin, February 4. MULTIPLE NCAA "A" times for Kendra Stern (Amherst College) and NCAA "B" times for Jack Brown (University of Arizona) earned the pair the Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week Honors. Also earning the award were Julia Smit (Stanford University), Kevin Coates (Lewis University) and Robert Barry (Denison University). The five were selected by coaches and media relations personnel for their performances January 25- 31.
Division I Women
Julia Smit, Stanford University
Smit (Mt. Sinai, NY) had five wins in dual met victories over University of California-Los Angeles (169-126) and No. 9 University of Southern California (179-119). The senior won the 200 freestyle (1:47.50, NCAA "B" time), the 100 freestyle (49.69, NCAA "B" time), the 200 breaststroke (2:13.04, NCAA "B" time) and assisted on the second place 200 freestyle relay (1:35.94) against UCLA.
Against USC, the All-American won the 200 backstroke (1:55.86, NCAA "B" time), won the 200 individual medley (1:56.41, NCAA "B" time), swam to a third place in the 200 freestyle (1:47.19, NCAA "B" time) and assisted on the winning 400 medley relay (3:38.63, NCAA "B" time).
Division I Men
Jack Brown, University of Arizona
Brown (Atlanta, GA) had two wins in No.3 Arizona's 181-171 dual meet victory over No. 1 Texas. The senior won the 200 individual medley (1:48.74, NCAA "B" time) and the 400 individual medley (3:54.55, NCAA "B" time). Brown also swam to a second place in the 200 freestyle (1:38.95), a third place in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.66) and a third place in the 500 freestyle (4:34.41).
Division II Men
Kevin Coates, Lewis University
Coates (Louisville, KY) had two wins in the 87-114 dual meet loss to the University of Indianapolis. The junior won the 500 freestyle (4:35.06, NCAA "B" time) and the 1000 freestyle (9:31.00, NCAA "B" time).
Division III Women
Kendra Stern, Amherst College
Stern (Albuquerque, NM) had three wins in the 159-139 dual meet victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The junior won the 200 freestyle (1:49.82, NCAA "A" time), the 100 freestyle (51.32, NCAA "A" time), and the 200 individual medley (2:06.41, NCAA "B" time). Stern also assisted on the winning 200 medley relay (1:50.12).
Division III Men
Robert Barry, Denison University
Barry (Richmond, VA) had two wins in the 164-135 dual meet victory over Carnegie Mellon. The sophomore won the 100 backstroke (50.89, NCAA "B" time) and the 200 backstroke (1:53.72, NCAA "B" time). Barry also assisted on the winning 200 medley relay (1:35.37) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.97).
There were no nominations for division II women.
