Uster International: Rebecca Soni, Kimberly Buys Break Meet Records

USTER, Switzerland, January 31. THE final day of the two-day short course meter Uster International produced a pair of meet records.

World record holder Rebecca Soni clocked a meet record in the women's 200 breast with a 2:21.75. That swim demolished the 2:24.88 set by Julia Hjorth-Hansen last year. Soni did, however, come up a second short of Tara Kirk's American record of 2:20.70 set in 2004. This issue will remain whenever world-class U.S. citizens swim in short course meters events going forward due to a USA Swimming decision last year.

Once USA Swimming implemented the techsuit ban on Oct. 1, 2009, it also decided that American records could not be set in techsuits even if legally used in an international meet. That ruling wasn't made all that public until U.S. citizens began breaking world records at the Duel in the Pool, and the corresponding American records remained on the books.

Denmark's Louise Jansen took second in the race with a 2:32.13, while Switzerland's Patrizia Humplik placed third in 2:35.78. Hungary's Akos Molnar claimed the men's 200 breast in 2:10.92, while Canada's Warren Barnes took second in 2:15.67. Italy's Alessio Boggiatto garnered third in 2:16.32.

Belgium's Kimberly Buys posted a meet record in the women's 100 back. She clocked a 59.01 to clip the 59.27 set by Antje Buschschulte last year. Hungary's Zsuzsanna Jakaobos took second in 1:02.58, while Canada's Andrea Jurenovskis touched third in 1:02.97.

Buys doubled up with a 59.33 the women's 100 fly, while Turkey's Iris Rosenberger touched second in 59.70. Switzerland's Maria Ugolkova completed the top three in 1:00.36.

Hungary's Evelyn Verraszto cruised in the women's 200 free to open the final day with a 1:57.10. Germany's Daniela Schreiber took second in 1:59.66, while Italy's Laura Borghetti finished third in 2:01.54. Italy's Mattia Aversa won the men's 100 back in 55.09, while Canada's Trevor Nicolas (55.40) and Cam Cummings (55.45) took second and third.

Switzerland's Dominik Meichtry claimed the men's 200 free in 1:45.83, while Italy's Dario Palladino grabbed second in 1:48.66. Portugal's Tiago Andre Venancio placed third in 1:48.67. Meichtry doubled up in the men's 100 fly with a 53.77, while Germany's Toni Embacher finished second in 54.33, while Italy's Lorenzo Benatti placed third in 54.55.

Jakaobos raced to the win in the women's 400 IM with Germany's Theresa Michalak taking second in 4:45.82. Switzerland's Annick van Westendorp rounded out the top three in 4:54.12. Hungary's David Verraszto claimed the men's 400 IM in 4:12.94. Poland's Lukasz Wojt touched second in 4:14.45, while Italy's Matteo Pelizzari garnered third in 4:23.13.

Jessica Hardy cruised in the women's 50 free with a 24.64 for the win. Schreiber took second in 25.44, while Germany's Adela Suchy placed third in 25.87. Venancio picked up his second podium of the day with a 22.85 for the men's 50 free win. Benatti took second in 22.98, while Switzerland's Val Mikos placed third in 23.19.

A fun mixed 200 medley relay took place at the end of the meet. The Denmark/U.S. team of Marcus Bak (27.60), Mads Jensen (25.33), Hardy (30.42) and Jansen (26.34) won the exhibition race in 1:49.69. While a multi-national team is not eligible for FINA Masters world records, it is interesting to compare this relay to the youngest mixed Masters relay record available. The German team of Andrea Kutz, Matthias Rumpf, Steffen Schunemann and Sandra Thieme own the mixed 100-119 medley relay FINA Masters world record with a 1:51.86 set in 2005.
