Italian Grand Prix: Nick Thoman, Federica Pellegrini Top Sprint Meet -- November 15, 2009

VIAREGGIO, Italy, November 14. IN a one-day short course sprint meet, Nick Thoman and Federica Pellegrini earned the top single-event performances at the Italian Grand Prix held in Viareggio.

In the men's splash-and-dash, Bryan Lundquist paced a trio of fast Americans at the top of the podium with a meet-record 21.32. Nick Brunelli (21.88) and Cullen Jones (21.98) finished 2-3 in the event as well. Brunelli returned in the men's 100 free with a 48.98 for the win. Meanwhile, Cesare Sciocchetti touched first in the men's 200 free in 1:44.28.

In another battle of Americans in Italy, Nick Thoman touched out Randall Bal in the men's 50 back, 23.62 to 23.63. Thoman then rattled the world record in the men's 100 back with a 49.68 for the win. Damiano Lestingi (51.95) and Bal (52.23) completed the podium in the event.


Daniele Cremonsei took home the men's 50 breast title in 27.36, while Edoardo Giorgetti snagged the men's 100 breast crown in 59.57. Lundquist added the men's 50 fly to his 50 free title with a meet-record 23.16 in the sprint fly. Rudy Goldin grabbed the men's 100 fly crown in 52.43. Romanos Alyfantis dropped the Greek record in the men's 200 IM with a 1:55.26. That effort beat Ioannis Kokkodis' 1:57.16 set in 2006.

Federica Pellegrini smashed the meet record in the women's 200 free in 1:53.80. The previous best from the meet had been a 1:55.19.

Miroslava Najadanovski topped the women's 50 free in 25.02, while also taking home the women's 100 free in 54.55. Elena Gemo took home the women's 50 back title in 27.26. She also lowered the meet record in the 100 back with a 59.11 in prelims, before lowering it even further with a 58.37 during finals for the win.

Sara Damiani claimed the women's 50 breast in 31.51. She also pocketed the women's 100 breast crown in 1:07.86. Silvia Di Pietro captured the women's 50 fly in 26.14, before taking home the women's 100 fly in 59.56. Meanwhile, Francesca Segat snatched the women's 200 IM in 2:09.64.
