Purdue vs. Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Michigan, November 13. THE Purdue women's swimming and diving team concluded the first day of a two-day dual at Eastern Michigan with a 133-37 lead Friday.

Purdue won the 200 medley relay as Allie Smith, Jessica Davis, Seraphina Van and Ariel Martin combined to stop the clock in 1:44.69. Martin, Kristen Gilson, Caitlin Hamilton and Lisa Butler combined to win the 800 freestyle relay in 7:31.98.

Butler won the 200 freestyle in a season-best 1:51.17 clocking. Hamilton, who broke Purdue's freshman record in the 1,000 freestyle twice last weekend, finished second with a 1:52.61 time in her first 200 freestyle of the season. Butler also took the 50 freestyle in a season-best time of 23.40 and was followed by freshman Lauren Nichols' runner-up 23.62 finish. Sophomore Sara Bogert was fourth in 24.46, and junior Katie Beck was next in a season-best time of 24.54.

Purdue also grabbed four of the first five finishes in the 200 IM. Smith won her first attempt at the event this season by stopping the clock in 2:07.04 and was followed by Sarah Dunleavy's season-best time of 2:09.80. Freshmen Katie Hingst and Courtney Tumbush finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 2:13.64 and 2:13.89.

The Boilermakers swept the top-three positions in the 100 backstroke. Smith remained unbeaten in the event this season as she touched the wall in 55.93. Martin earned second with her 57.48 time, and Beck was third in 57.82.

Purdue also claimed first through third in the 1-meter diving event. Senior Ashley Karnes, the defending Big Ten champion off the lowest springboard, scored a season-high 309.52 points to grab the win. Junior Erin Mertz finished second with 292.21 points, and sophomore Casey Matthews scored 268.50 for third.

Freshman Ellesse Lunde grabbed her first collegiate win with a season-best time of 1:06.09 in the 100 breaststroke as Purdue took the top-four places in that event. Lunde was followed by Davis in 1:06.97, classmate Emily McIlrath in 1:07.00 and sophomore Christina Jacobs in 1:07.13.

Van also grabbed an individual victory by bettering the 200 butterfly field with her 2:04.80 time. Senior Christine Inman finished second in 2:06.19. Sophomore Amy Gutwein led the Boilermakers in the 1,000 freestyle as she finished second with a season-best time of 10:19.35.

The dual concludes Saturday, with action from Jones Natatorium beginning at noon ET.
