Second Leg of FINA World Cup Begins Tomorrow in Moscow

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, November 5. THE second leg of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup, taking place in Moscow (RUS), will display many stars of the pool on November 6-7. At the Olympiskii complex, no less than 25 nations will present some of their best athletes for a two-day competition that will certainly be highlighted by valuable performances.

From South Africa, George Du Rand, Katheryn Meaklim, Cameron van der Burgh or Roland Schoeman will swim in Russia; USA is sending Jessica Hardy and Peter Marshall; Ukraine has in Igor Borysik its main asset; Singapore will be well represented by Tao Li; Australia is always a strong contender, with the presence of Marieke Guehrer, Felicity Galvez or Leisel Jones; Sweden's Therese Alshammar, Stefan Nystrand or Sarah Sjostrom will certainly shine; from France, Aurore Mongel and Sophie De Ronchi are the swimmers to follow; from Finland, Hanna-Maria Seppala is the star; Hinkelien Schreuder will try to medal for the Netherlands; and Markus Rogan will certainly represent Austria at the highest level.

After the first leg of the series, held in Durban (RSA) on October 16-17, the provisional leaders of the 2009 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup overall ranking are Peter Marshall (USA) among men, and Therese Alshammar (SWE) in the women's field. Four new World Records were established in the South African meet – Peter Marshall in the men's 50m backstroke (22.75), Therese Alshammar in the women's 50m butterfly (24.75) and 100m individual medley (58.51), and Jessica Hardy (USA) in the women's 50m breaststroke (29.45). Moreover, eight new World Cup records were improved in Durban.

Cameron van der Burgh (RSA) and Marieke Guehrer (AUS) are respectively the defending 2008 men and women winners of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup.
