Australian Olympian Jodie Henry Retires -- September 30, 2009

SYDNEY, Australia, September 30. AT 25 years of age triple Olympic gold medalist from Athens, Jodie Henry, has officially announced her retirement from competitive swimming today.

Henry, who last competed in 2008 before failing to trial for the Beijing Olympic Games due to a pelvic injury, will leave the sport as one of the most decorated female sprinters of the last decade.

Coached by Shannon Rollason and a product of the Chandler Swim Club then Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, Henry shone at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and was also a triple gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

Her Athens achievement of three gold medals - all in world record time – in the 100m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay - will go down as one of the great Olympic performances of all-time.

Henry joined the Telstra Dolphins in 2001 for the Goodwill Games in Brisbane before competing in the first of four World Championships in Fukuoka Japan.

From 2004 to 2006 she was the Olympic and World Champion for the 100m freestyle and in two Commonwealth Games in 2002 and 2006, she won four gold and three silver medals.

Henry last swam for Australia at the 2007 World Championships where she won gold in the 4x100m freestyle and medley relay.

September 30, 2009 I was waiting for this call for some time now. It was clear that Jodie did not have the passion for the sport as for the likes of Trickett, Petria Thomas, Phelps and many other champions did/do. I remember Henry stating shortly after her decsion to withdraw from the Olympic trials that she did not want to retire. It would have been nice to see her compete at the Comm Games next year, but oh well.

I hope Trickett comes back - hopefully at trials - to qualify at least for Pan Pacs. At least she won't have the worry of being physically fit and ready in time for both the Comm Games and Pan Pacs.

With the Pan Pacs up first (normally Comm Games are held at an earlier date), I wonder if many Aussie swimmers will make the trip to Long Beach? In 2006, not many of our real big stars made the trip. I believe Leisel Jones has partially committed to attending the event.

Anyway, back to Henry, all the best to her and I wish she has a happy future away from the pool.

October 1, 2009 Forgive me if I am wrong. All along I thought the Pan Pacs were held in Irvine (which they are - just read on the USA Swimming website), but I was checking the Canadian Swimming website out and they mentioned that the Pan Pacs were in Long Beach.
