CHICAGO, Illinois, September 20. THE winners of awards in swimming, synchronized swimming and diving were announced at last night's ceremony that concluded the 2009 United States Aquatic Sports convention.
Two awards presented previously were announced at the start of the banquet. Bartolo Consolo of Italy won the R. Max Ritter Award, given to "the organization or individual of a FINA member federation who has contributed the most to the advancement of understanding and good will among nations through international participation in amateur aquatic sports," according to the award's description. Consolo was given the award at the world championships in July.
Earlier this year, Dara Torres received the International Fair Play Award for her sportsmanship in the semifinals of the 50 freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Torres worked to delay the start of the race as a competitor's suit ripped and had to put on a new one. Torres accepted the award at the world championships.

September 20, 2009 For decades, Sid Cassidy has tirelessly and selflessly worked towards the development of open water swimming while helping bring the sport to the Olympics. Sid has done it all as a swimmer, coach, administrator, promoter, referee and race director - always with the goal of making open water safe, enjoyable and competitive for all its athletes. Congratulations to an incredible individual who has made an entire sport better in every aspect. Submitted by: munatones
September 21, 2009 I'm a little surprised at swimmer of the year! It seems like the old throw a dog a bone year. Phelps should have been swimmer again, and Peirsols 200 bk was a out of the park swim. I believe the hipe of the 100 fly by Cavic was why it won. To bad for Peirsol, although I believe he isn't to worried. He always seems to know what he does is going to go under the radar. A class act; Aaron both of your backs were amazing! Submitted by: swimfan3
