Japan National Sports Festival: Misaki Yamaguchi Sets Japanese Record, Ryosuke Irie Downs Junya Koga -- September 12, 2009

NAGAOKA, Niigata, Japan, September 12. MISAKI Yamaguchi lowered the Japanese record in the women's 100 free during the second day of the Japan National Sports Festival held in Nagaoka.

Yamaguchi clocked a time of 54.43 to break the Japanese record of 54.88 previously set by Haruka Ueda at the World Championships.


Meanwhile, Ryosuki Irie downed Junya Koga, 52.37 to 52.87, in the men's 100 back finale.

"To win the race was important," Irie said. "With this time, I could come into play in the 100 at the global level."

Irie finished fourth at the World Championships in Rome with a 52.73, falling to Koga's winning time of 52.26.

100 free: Ranmaru Harada, 49.39
100 back (B): Kosuke Hagino, 55.64

100 back: Ryosuke Irie, 52.37
50 free (B): Takuya Ishizaki, 23.41
200 butterfly (A): Yuta Kimura, 1:55.60
100 breast: Ryo Tateishi, 1:00.23

Women
400 IM (A): Miho Takahashi, 4:40.41
100 free: Misaki Yamaguchi, 54.43 New Japanese record
100 back (B): Mai Harada, 1:01.01
100 free (A): Shoko Tanabe, 55.45
100 back: Aya Terakawa, 59.90
50 free (B): Miki Uchida, 25.90
200 butterfly (A): Yui Miyamoto, 2:06.73
100 breast: Satomi Suzuki, 1:06.67

September 12, 2009 Interesting how Irie was so consitant all season, was a bit off at Worlds (especially the beginning), and now beats the world champ every time they meet. In fact, Worlds was the only time that Koga has beaten Irie since Irie first went sub-53! You sort of wonder if Irie will get down to the world record before the suits are banned.
