KUMAMOTO, Japan, September 4. THE 85th edition of the Japanese University Championships began today in Kumamoto. The location is in the south of Japan, and the meet is taking place over long course meters.
Satomi Suzuki opened the meet with a Japanese record in the women's 100 breast. Her time of 1:06.32 broke the record of 1:07.27 previously held by Masami Tanaka. The record was the oldest in the books heading into the meet. Suzuki is 18 and her previous best coming into 2009 was a 1:10.49. Last June, she charted a 1:07.41 at the Japan Open.
Ryosuke Irie clocked a meet-record time of 1:54.36 in the men's 200 back to win the event for the second year in a row.
