FINA World Championships, Swimming: Flash! Jessicah Schipper Grabs World Record in 200 Fly; Breaks 2:04 -- July 30, 2009

ROME, Italy, July 30. AUSTRALIA's Jessicah Schipper led a pair of swimmers under the world record in the women's 200 fly at the FINA World Championships.


Schipper stopped the clock in 2:03.41 to smash Mary DeScenza's global mark of 2:04.14 set during prelims.

Here are the comparative splits:
Schipper: 28.21, 1:00.25 (32.04), 1:32.23 (31.98), 2:03.41 (31.18)
DeScenza: 28.79, 1:00.57 (31.78), 1:32.49 (31.92), 2:04.14 (31.65)

China's Liu Zige joined Schipper in the 2:03 club with a silver-winning time of 2:03.90, while Hungary's Katinka Hosszu rounded out the podium with a third-place 2:04.28.

DeScenza did not have enough left en to pocket any hardware, as she wound up fourth overall in 2:04.41.

China's Jiao Liuyang (2:04.50), France's Aurore Mongel (2:05.48), Canada's Audrey Lacroix (2:05.95) and Australia's Samantha Hamill (2:06.11) completed the championship heat.
