ROME, Italy, July 29. ITALY's Federica Pellegrini cleared the 1:53 barrier in the women's 200 free en route to a world record at the FINA World Championships.
Pellegrini clocked a sterling time of 1:52.98 to break the world record of 1:53.67 she set during semis.
Here are the comparative splits;
Finals: 27.34, 55.60 (28.26), 1:24.38 (28.78), 1:52.98 (28.60)
Semis: 27.15, 55.82 (28.67), 1:24.77 (28.95), 1:53.67 (28.90)
The United States completed the podium as Allison Schmitt (1:54.96) and Dana Vollmer (1:55.64) finished second and third. Schmitt's time beat Vollmer's American record of 1:55.29 set during semis.
Great Britain's Joanne Jackson (1:55.88), China's Yang Yu (1:56.28), China's Pang Jiaying (1:56.47), Hungary's Agnes Mutina (1:56.70) and Hungary's Evelyn Verraszto (1:57.50) finished outside the podium.

July 29, 2009 WOW! That's only 0.2 seconds slower than Mark Spitz swam to win gold in Munich...
But even if you take away the suit (say 0.4 seconds difference per 50m), she would still be swimming a solid 1:54, less than 2 seconds slower than Spitz. Impressive. Submitted by: mario2007
