Ukraine’s Igor Borysik Loses Chance at 100 Breast World Record

ROME, Italy, July 25. IN this age of swimsuit-aided times where world records fall at interclub meets, it is no wonder that a potential global mark slipped through the cracks.

Omega Timing alerted the swimming community to a potential world record in the men's 100 breast from June when it listed Igor Borysik's qualification time of 58.67 as the world record on the FINA World Championships heat sheet for that event. That time is well beyond the world record of 58.91 set by Kosuke Kitajima at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The only event taking place in Kharkiv, Ukraine on the date of Borysik's swim was the Summer Cup. Initial research into the event results show that Borysik clocked a 1:00.22 in the 100 breast.

Meanwhile, Swimming World superfan and often Reaction Time commenter "MJB" discovered an article by Turmir.com.ua reporting that Borysik did indeed clock a 58.67 and the time would likely stand as a Ukrainian record. Borysik, however, fell victim to a similar fate as Anastasia Zueva did at the Mare Nostrum series.

According to the report, the Ukrainian event at which Borysik clocked the time did not provide doping control the day of his swim, thus eliminating any chance of Borysik being credited with the world record.

Zueva had something similar happen at the Mare Nostrum series, as previously reported.
