INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 11. IN an exciting sprint free finish, California's Dana Vollmer surfaced victorious over SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir in the women's 100 free.

Vollmer, who went out in 25.76, had just enough in the tank to hold off a charging Weir, 54.00 to 54.03, at the wall. Vollmer's time set her personal best, breaking the 54.21 set during prelims. Both times are among the top 10 in the world this year. Vollmer will have a packed slate in Rome with spots in the 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly as well as a potential three relay swims.

"I just started sprinting at the beginning and I saw Amanda Weir coming at me," Vollmer said. "I told myself to just put my head down and stop breathing and get my hand to the wall. Every race I've had, I've had a best time. I just hope I can do that at Worlds."

Also earning potential relay spots, Tennessee's Christine Magnuson finished third in 54.36 to clear her personal best of 54.45, while Stanford's Julia Smit also clocked a personal-best time of 54.38. Her effort erased her 54.67.

They are potential relay spots because the U.S. will pick from any one on the roster to fill its relay spots in Rome.

July 11, 2009 I think all of the Americans can and hopefully will go faster at Worlds. With that in mind, we have decent chances at Worlds and I think these are probably the best relay combos for the 4x100 relays: (Phelps, Lochte, Webber-Gale, Adrian) and (Vollmer, Weir, Magnuson, Torres).

July 11, 2009 I still think we're silver medal favorites in both relays (the French probably have a good second on us; the Dutch - a closer race).

July 11, 2009 Both 400 free relays will be white-washes, well thats what I think.. the dutch are so dominant in the womens and well the french, nothing needs to be said about them. Both relays will considerably improve however I dont think to the extent to challenge for a gold medal.
