INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 10. LONGHORN's Kathleen Hersey finished on top of a back-and-forth battle with Stanford's Elaine Breeden for the women's 200 fly crown.
Hersey completed the swim in 2:06.44, which cleared her personal best of 2:06.96. The effort is the fourth best in the world this year behind Great Britain's Ellen Gandy (2:04.83), China's Jiao Liuyang (2:05.22) and Australia's Jessicah Schipper (2:05.93).
Hersey battled Breeden throughout the race. Breeden went out under American-record pace with a 28.37, while Hersey touched first at the 100-meter mark with a 1:00.39. Breeden paced the field at the 150-meter mark with a 1:33.34, while Hersey completed the swim in first.
"I was just thinking about my hips up and head down as much as I could," Hersey said. "I knew they were fierce competitors, and I'm so excited coming off this year at Texas."
Breeden, however, faded to third with a 2:07.40 as Athens Bulldog Mary DeScenza went the final few strokes without breathing to steal second place with a 2:07.13. The time broke DeScenza's personal best of 2:07.26.

July 10, 2009 Tough break for Breeden with two 3rd's; she may have gone out too fast. Smart race by Hersey and great gutsy clutch performance by DeScenza to finally get her hard-earned spot on the team! Although I was hoping for faster times from all of them, the mental game between the 3 of them with only 2 spots for 3 women was tough, and hopefully now they can ramp it up a bit in Rome.
