INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 8. NORTH Baltimore's Michael Phelps completed the double in triumphant fashion this evening with a victorious time in the men's 200 fly.

Phelps followed his 200 free victory with a swift time of 1:52.76 for the 200 fly win. He went out under the world-record pace with a 25.17, but split the rest of the way with a 53.69 and 1:23.27. The time is the fifth-best of all time, and smashed Takeshi Matsuda's time of 1:53.87 for the best in the world this year.

"I think coming in and being able to do what I did tonight, I know I probably didn't prepare myself the best way," Phelps said. "Taking six months off at the beginning of the year wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I did it anyway."

Club Wolverine's Tyler Clary raced to second with a 1:53.64 as he shattered his personal-best time of 1:57.61. The performance moved him ahead of Gil Stovall (1:53.86) as the second-fastest American in the event of all time. He also moved into fourth all time in the world. Club Wolverine teammate Daniel Madwed completed the top three with a time of 1:56.13. The effort cleared his previous personal best of 1:57.03.

July 8, 2009 Watch out for Tyler Clary.

July 8, 2009 is this the end of the road for tarwater?

July 8, 2009 Uh... Tarwater made it on the 800 free relay. Not the end of the road.

July 8, 2009 Wow another incredibly impressive swim by Clary. Watch out for him in the 200 back now after his incredibly times in the 4 im and 2 fly.

July 8, 2009 Anyone notice how upset Phelps was after the 200 fly? First time he used the full suit and I don't think liked it! If you can read lips, he seemed to be saying " I told...you so" as he got out of the pool. His stroke looked short and labored towards the end. Look for him to still use it in the 100 fly though since he did such a quick time in Canada.

July 8, 2009 Once again, the men's team are holding their own, the women's team has an uphill battle (specially with Hoff not performing, Coughlin missing).

July 8, 2009 lol I was trying to read his lips too; I thought he was saying "unbelievable"...(as in unbelievably bad?) I thought it was actually very good considering 6 months off and playing golf recently. Clary's turning into total stud; Phelps will have his hands full not only with Clary but with Cseh and the Japanese guy, among others....

July 8, 2009 Hate to be the one to bring it up, but Clary is in a Jaked, if I can see the blurry video correctly, and suddenly posts 3-4 second time drops. Piersol setting a world record in a leg suit only!

July 8, 2009 No I'm glad you brought it up; I forgot about it and I'm sure it's a big factor if that's what he's wearing. Even he seemed surprised by his time.

By the way sorry I'm having trouble with both my work and home computer that keep posting things multiple times; also posting to the wrong story. I've noticed some other people have on here too. Not sure what the problem is.

July 8, 2009 Perisol was wearing full body Arena X-glide, same suit as Bernard. These Jaked suits look like mirrors the way the light refracts off of them. Don't people realize the down side to all these world records? after 2010 it will probably be 30 years before someone will be able to go these pre-LZR times. Times mean nothing.

July 8, 2009 Peirsol's suit was a waist-to-ankle jammer for the 100 back, not a full body suit, but other than that your point is well taken. I was trying to remain detached but I got caught up in the excitement because his stroke looked so amazing. I hope they will have two sets of records eventually. But for Rome, unless you're Michael Phelps, don't wear these suits at your own risk. I did hear that one of the French swimmers was boycotting the sprints, which I admire his principle, if this is true.

July 9, 2009 On the double posting, its a matter of the lag time with the program this website uses. You can click to send the comment, and nothing will happen for a fairly long period of time. Not even an indication that it is working on the request. If you hit submit again, it will double post when it finally catches up.

July 9, 2009 liquid....
do you mean Irie wearing X-Glide amazing?
Remember when Irie broke the 200 and this website was all abuzz at how amazing his stroke looked? (and Irie only wore the leggings in the 200 also).
Little things that make you stop and pause....
And Leveux(sp?) is the sprinter talking about not competing again until after Jan. 1. Says that he is considering not racing again until textile suits are the rule and that once the sport returns to that form of attire he feels he can be one of the top sprinters in the world.
I say bravo to him. He'll be the only one....but at least someone has the guts enough to make a stand on this.
I am getting a little sick of watching these elite athletes parading past microphones under the delusion that these huge time drops are actually their own doing. I would be more impressed with someone stepping up and saying "I LOVE THIS SUIT!! It just made me swim so fast. I can't believe how fast this suit made me go".
At least it would be honest.
And this is nothing to take away from Peirsol. I think he's absolutely far and away the best backstroker in the world in any suit. In fact, with the way he swims, I would be willing to bet that he would actually win races by larger margins from the rest of the world class backstrokers in normal suits. Might be slower times, but he would win by more. Everything about his races is better than everyone else, with the exception of maybe Lochte....he might stay close.
Would love to see the top 8 in the world swim the 100 in jammers. I bet Peirsol crushes the field.
