INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 8. CALIFORNIA's Dana Vollmer put a charge into the American record held by Katie Hoff of North Baltimore, but slowed up just a bit to capture the title in 1:56.20 in the women's 200 free.
Vollmer performance cleared her previous personal best of 1:56.88, but fell short of Hoff's national mark of 1:55.78. She also improved upon her fourth-best time in the world this year. Vollmer went out under world-record pace with a 26.87, then fall back under American-record pace with a 56.18 and 1:25.97.
"I didn't know I was on American-record pace," Vollmer said. "I just tried to hang with Allison [Schmitt] and have a good time. This year has been amazing, and such a blast."
Club Wolverine's Allison Schmitt provided some added incentive to Vollmer with a second-place time of 1:57.25, while KING's Ariana Kukors finished third in 1:58.28. Sierra Marlins' Alyssa Anderson completed the top four with a 1:58.45 to earn an 800 free relay spot at Worlds.
Other notably finishes included ASK's Dagny Knutson placing fifth in 1:58.46 and Hoff continuing to suffer the after effects from an ill-timed illness with an eighth-place 1:59.59.

July 8, 2009 lol I was trying to read his lips too; I thought he was saying "unbelievable"...(as in unbelievably bad?) I thought it was actually very good considering 6 months off and playing golf recently. July 8, 2009 Tough luck for Hoff; Rowdy speculated that she was overtraining; if so maybe that made her vulnerable to her recent illness. Great swim by Vollmer and she's still got good shot in the 100 free/+relay too. I noticed another swimmer experimenting with the windmill stroke at the end; it was Bispo and I think she would have caught Nymyer at the end if she had glided in like Nymyer did.
