INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 7. CLUB Wolverine's Peter Vanderkaay was out under American-record pace at the 200-meter mark, but settled for a strong time in the men's 400 free for the win at the USA Swimming National Championships.

Vanderkaay checked in with a time of 3:45.17, just beating his best time this year of 3:45.21. However, he still remains off the world-elite pace already posted by China's Zhang Lin (3:42.63) and Tunisia's Ous Mellouli (3:42.71) from earlier this year.

Vanderkaay was under Larsen Jensen's national record at the 100 (54.34 to 54.86) and the 200 (1:51.55 to 1:51.91) before falling off the pace at the 300 (2:48.60 to 2:48.07).

Club Wolverine teammate Dan Madwed pushed him the first 300 meters before Vanderkaay dropped a strong final 100 meters. Madwed clocked a silver-winning time of 3:47.24 to smash his personal best time of 3:47.24.

"I was sick a couple of weeks ago, but I think I bounced back," Vanderkaay said. "I just wanted to get out there and make the [World Championships] team. Daniel [Madwed] is a great asset to the team."

Longhorn's Michael Klueh (3:50.98) and Stanford's Trevor Scheid (3:51.10) provided some outside smoke with third and fourth-place finishes from lane 7 and 8, respectively.

July 7, 2009 We lost alot of depth with Vendt and Larsen retiring, and LaTourette at WUG. PVK should still challenge for medal when he hits his peak in Rome; good swim for Madwed but he would need alot of improvement to even final.

July 7, 2009 Congrats to Smit who missed getting an individual Olympic event last year. Very impressive breaststroke; she even outsplit Leverenz. Pelton had a nice drop from Jr. Worlds, but given how much she died on the last 50, it was more that Kukors, Knutson, and Beisel failed to capitalize:

Kukors got a little too far behind on fly and failed to capitalize on her superior breaststroke, Knutson didn't catch up in freestyle as expected, and Beisel was dead last after the fly and never got into contention despite her usual strengths in all 3 remaining strokes, particularly backstroke where Pelton still outsplit her by a second. Given how close the outcome was, I'm interested in learning what suits the finalists were wearing, especially Pelton, Kukors, and Knutson.
