July 7, 2009 Basson and Meichtry won't swim the A final since they aren't American...both have been bumped to the B final Submitted by: squiggles255
July 7, 2009 I'm nervous as hell for Ariana tonight. I hope she makes it, looks tough between her Smitty and Beisel. I think Beisel will win. Also, how adorable is it that Mattie won the swim off, so she'll join Ariana in the final! Submitted by: Priyant
July 7, 2009 Wow! Congrats to Shanteau for breaking that minute barrier. Submitted by: gtx84
July 7, 2009 Pri, the swim-off Mattie Kukors won means she's 26th in prelims, so she's second alternate for tonight. I.e., if two people scratch, she's in the B-Final. I'm still gonna say Kukors first, Knutson second, but Julia Smit is really impressing me. Submitted by: SwimDER94
July 7, 2009 Anyone know why Ziegler didn't swim the 400?
She was entered.
Concentrating on the longer events?
Aside from women's 100 Fly, prelims was pretty ho-hum this morning. Hope there are going to be a few more fireworks this evening and people were just cruising to get into finals. Podium spots in Rome are going to take a lot faster judging by what has been thrown down around the world so far this year. Guess we'll see tonight. Submitted by: rcoach
July 7, 2009 4:11 from Tyler Clary. Not too shabby! Hoff, Vanderkaay, and Lochte all pretty slow - hopefully they were cruising...
I'd also like any news on Ziegler. Is she out of the meet?
Have to say it...what were they (Magnuson, Breeden, Vollmer, Clary) wearing? Submitted by: SwimDER94
July 7, 2009 women's 200 IM is going to be a dog fight!! Any two of these ladies could be going...I must say I was impressed with Elizabeth Pelton's swim this morning! Submitted by: squiggles255
July 7, 2009 Ariana Kukors will be under 2:10 tonight, I bet. Submitted by: abd6894
July 7, 2009 Wow I feel like a dork. Cheers for the update regarding Mattie. But wow, that 200IM is so effing close. Go Ariana! Submitted by: Priyant
July 7, 2009 I'm guessing Ziegler knows she wont get a medal in the 400 what with all the 4:00's lately, so she knows after her Beijing experience last year, to save it for her best bets and focus on the 800/1500 combo. Unlike last year when she was stretching herself at trials as far back as the 100 free. Submitted by: Priyant
July 7, 2009 Interesting thoughts about Ziegler and stretched too thin.
Could be she have dialed in with training into the 800/1500 mode that she didn't want to risk having to train more speed work for the 400....although....quite frankly, when you are having to go 8:14 to potentially win in Rome....that still requires quite a bit of decent speed through 400 (out in 4:03-4:04 --home on 4:09-4:10 with change).
Seems kind of curious she didn't give the 400 a shake at least in prelims to warm up. I think 4:03 will make the team for Rome here given what we saw this morning. Submitted by: rcoach
July 7, 2009 Well....guess a lot of people were cruising teh prelims after all.
MUCH better finals tonight. Some fun races. The U.S. has answered the call from the rest of the world it would seem (at least on day 1).
FYI in case you missed it, they said on TV tonight that Ziegler is not swimming because she contracted swine flu. That sucks. But in the bigger picture, missing this worlds won't affect her run to London at all. Submitted by: rcoach
