USA Swimming Adopts Revised FINA Approved Suit List; Releases Statement of Disappointment -- June 23, 2009

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, June 23. IN response to FINA's bombshell announcement that nearly all suits are back in play, USA Swimming has followed the lead of the international federation by adopting the revised list.

In a press release distributed today, USA Swimming confirmed the move.

Based on FINA's ruling Monday, USA Swimming will adopt as legal in general competition, all suits included on the revised FINA-approved list. The list published Monday includes an additional 198 suits, which have been added to the original 202 that were approved.

Additional requirements regarding availability of swimsuits will still apply for the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships.

However, USA Swimming still plans to back stricter regulations from FINA in the future.

Statement from USA Swimming President Jim Wood on the FINA Swimsuit Ruling:
USA Swimming stands firm in its desire to preserve the integrity of the sport, and for that reason, we will continue to push for stricter restrictions on swimsuit technology. We are highly disappointed by the FINA ruling released Monday, but in order to keep USA Swimming's rules in compliance with those of the international governing body, we will immediately adopt the revised list of approved swimsuits. Moving forward, we encourage FINA to carefully examine this matter in order to ensure the best possible future for our sport.

June 23, 2009 Here's a question, one that may have been asked before. It seems like there is a vast majority of swimmers, coaches and federations. If that's the case, why don't they simply choose not to use the high-tech suits during worlds?

If 6 of the 8 finalists in the 100 free wore traditional suits, wouldn't that set a precedent and shame the 2 that wore the tech suits that more than likely win the medals? Better still, imagine the what it would look like if they were beat by a swimmer not wearing a tech suit.

I appreciate all the swimmers and coaches who took a stand against the suits, I truly do. But it would speak volumes if someone put their money where their mouth is and actually follow through on their stand.

A couple weeks ago everyone made a big deal that Lochte wore briefs at a relatively competitive meet. I thought it was a great statement too, no doubt. I'm just wondering if someone will have fortitude to do it at worlds. I know what some may be thinking: "That's a dumb idea." "All the training, wasted." "If he/she wore a suit it would have been a medal or wr." All valid points given FINA's spineless fumbling on this issue. But I see it as an opportunity for swimmers to become empowered and take back their sport.
