COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 28. CALIFORNIA's Nathan Adrian posted the second-fastest time ever in the 100-yard free to smash his American record in the event.

Adrian dropped the hammer on a 41.08 to crush his American record of 41.43 set as a relay leadoff for Cal at the 2009 Pac 10 Championships. He stands behind only Cesar Cielo's NCAA and U.S. Open record of 40.92 set last year.

The win is California's 10 in the event, and it trails only Michigan (16) for the NCAA lead in the 100 free. Previous winners for the Golden Bears are Matt Biondi (1985, 1986, 1987), Bart Kizierowski (1999), Anthony Ervin (2000, 2001, 2002) and Duje Draganja (2003, 2005).

Texas' Jimmy Feigen won the battle for second with a 41.49, which ties for the eighth-best ever. Auburn's Matt Targett settled for third in 41.64 that ties for 12th.

Texas owned a slight advantage with 429 points compared to Auburn's 422 after the event. Stanford (363.5), California (269) and Arizona (262) comprised the rest of the top five.
