NCAA Men's Division I Championships: Michigan's Tyler Clary Clocks NCAA Record in 200 Back -- March 28, 2009

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 28. MICHIGAN's Tyler Clary posted the second-fastest swim of all time in the 200-yard back to capture the title and the NCAA record.

Clary ripped off a 1:37.58 to break Ryan Lochte's 1:37.68 set representing Florida during the 2006 NCAA Championships. Clary, however, has a bit more to go before he catches Locthe's American record of 1:36.81 set while representing Daytona Beach in 2007.

While Michigan has a fairly deep tradition in the sport, it hasn't had many national titlists in the 200 back. Actually, the Wolverines' only win in the event came back in 1963 when Ed Bartsch posted a 1:57.8 for the triumph.

Arizona's Jake Tapp clocked a second-place time of 1:38.67, which is the ninth-fastest of all time, while Florida's Omar Pinzon took third in 1:39.50. Auburn's Pascal Wollach also broke 1:40 with a fourth-place 1:39.65.

Texas held onto its leading tally with 393 points, while Auburn cut the gap with 386 points. Stanford (344.5), Florida (256) and Arizona (250) were among the rest of the top five.
