COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 27. STANFORD's Austin Staab toyed with the men's 100-yard fly as he blasted his way to an American, NCAA and U.S. Open record in the event.
Staab nearly cleared the 44-second barrier with an astonishing time of 44.18. The time destroyed the American record of 44.67 set by Auburn's Tyler McGill during prelims. The effort also smashed the NCAA and U.S. Open record of 44.57 set by Arizona's Albert Subirats back in 2007.
The win gave Stanford its NCAA-leading eighth victory in the event all time. Previous Stanford winners include Pablo Morales (1984, 1985, 1986, 1987), Jay Mortenson (1988, 1989) and Dod Wales (1999).
McGill clocked a lifetime best 44.63, which is now the third-fastest time of all time. Meanwhile, Auburn's Logan Madson clocked a 44.99 to break 45 for the first time and move into the top five all time in the event.
Texas owned a tenuous lead after the event with 225 points, while Auburn pulled into a close second with 219 points. Stanford (204), Florida (159), California (150) and Michigan (150) were in the top five.
