COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 27. MICHIGAN's Tyler Clary demolished the American record in the men's 400-yard IM, and it came at the expense of a former Ann Arbor-based Michael Phelps.

Clary blasted through the 3:36 barrier with a scorching-fast time of 3:35.98 to break the 3:36.26 set by Phelps back in 2006. His effort also blasted the NCAA record of 3:38.03 Clary set during prelims.

The win gave Michigan its ninth 400 IM title in program history and kept the title in the hands of Michigan as Alex Vanderkaay won the event in 2007 and 2008. Previous Michigan triumphs went to Carl Robie (1965), Tom Dolan (1995, 1996) and Tim Sicilian (1999, 2000, 2001).

Georgia Tech's Gal Nevo rolled to a second-place time of 3:38.00, which now stands as the fourth-best time ever in the event, while Florida's Bradley Ally touched third in 3:38.20 – the ninth-fastest ever.

Texas remained in the lead with 211 points, while Auburn held second with 181 points. Stanford (166), Florida (159) and California (147) made up the rest of the top five.
