COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 26. CALIFORNIA's Nathan Adrian stood atop a stocked field of sprint freestylists when he finished the men's 50-yard free with another American record in the event.

After setting the American record in the men's splash-and-dash with an 18.76 during Cal's 200 free relay as a leadoff, Adrian went just a bit quicker in the individual event with an 18.71. The time gave Adrian sole possession of third place all time, behind Cesar Cielo (18.47) and Matt Targett (18.52). He moved ahead of Fred Bousquet's 18.74.

The win for Adrian gave Cal its fourth victory in the event in NCAA history, which ties it with USC for seventh. Previous Cal winners were Matt Biondi (1986, 1987) and Anthony Ervin (2000).

Texas' Jimmy Feigen became the youngest man to ever break 19 as the freshman raced to an 18.84 for second, while Targett took third in 18.87. Stanford's Alex Coville finished fourth with an 18.92, while Auburn's Jakob Andkjaer and Stanford's Austin Staab tied for the consolation heat win with matching 18.96s.

Texas became the first team to break 100 points with a 107-point tally after the event. Auburn stood second with 88 points, while Stanford (87), Florida (79) and California (69) were in the top five.

March 26, 2009 Targett negative split his 50! How's that possible? A blown taper perhaps?

March 26, 2009 That has to be a mistake right? That doesn't even make any sense at all....

March 26, 2009 That's not right. The Colorado Timing site shows him at 9.04, 9.83. If he could back half a 50 in 8.6, he'd be going 16 high. Not likely. Not sure where the problem in time reporting came from, though.

March 26, 2009 That looks wrong to me; he had an OK start and wasn't a full second behind at the 25, he was only a bit behind the leaders; I'm guessing the splits are supposd to be 9.20/9.67 not 10.20/8.67

March 26, 2009 I'm sure you all are correct and those are not the right splits, but it was strange to see out of the 16 swimmers in consuls and finals he was the only one to have splits listed like that.

March 27, 2009 matt targett was back in Australia last weekend competing in a LC meet. I think that was the selection meet for the Aus team for Worlds. That may have affected his taper.
