Blue Grass Mountain Conference Championships: Day 1 -- February 13, 2009

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, February 12. THE Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams began the 2009 Blue Grass Mountain Conference Championships Wednesday night, posting solid swims in the 1000 Freestyle events. For the third year in a row, the Bulldog swimming teams are hosting the BGMC championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center (MCAC) pool in downtown Charlotte.

For the Wingate men, senior Matthew Dugan (Wilson, N.C.) earned All-BGMC honors with his third-place finish in the 1000 Freestyle. Dugan's time was 9:43.03, an NCAA Division II "B" Cut and a school record. Bulldog sophomore Daniel Hoagland (Wilmington, N.C.) finished ninth at 9:59.99.

The Bulldog men posted 30 points on day one, good enough for second place in the team standings. Washington and Lee University leads after the 1000 Freestyle with 57 points. Rollins College is third with 20 markers. Wingate is the defending champion.


On the women's side, three Bulldogs finished in the top 11 of the 1000 Freestyle. Wingate freshman Stephanie Nagele (Greer, S.C.) led the way, gaining All-BGMC laurels with her third-place finish. Nagele recorded a time of 10:38.20, an NCAA Division II "B" Cut.

Bulldog sophomore Kelsey Trabue (South Lyon, Mich.) was seventh with a time of 10:54.70, while classmate Sarah Erickson (Silver Spring, Md.) earned an 11th place position with an 11:03.26 clocking.

The Wingate women put 35 points on the board after the 1000 Freestyle. Wingate trails Johns Hopkins University (44 points) by nine points. Limestone is in third place with 25 points. Johns Hopkins won the 2008 team title.
